The Edo State Police Command has arrested a social media influencer, Uzebor Emmanuel, popularly known as “Aza Woman,” over the circulation of false reports alleging the kidnapping of students and residents in parts of Benin City.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikioedem, the command said the arrest followed investigations into viral social media posts claiming that about six persons had been abducted through mini buses operating around Aduwawa and Ikpoba Hill areas of the state capital.

According to the police, the suspect allegedly published misleading information suggesting that some victims escaped from their abductors while others secured their freedom after paying ransom.

The command noted that preliminary investigations revealed the claims were false and deliberately disseminated, creating widespread fear and anxiety among residents while potentially undermining public confidence in the state’s security architecture.

“The deliberate spread of false information, particularly on matters relating to public safety and security, is a serious offence with far-reaching consequences,” the statement said.

Police warned that such misinformation could incite panic, disrupt public order, and divert security resources from addressing genuine emergencies.

The command further stressed that the security of the state should not be compromised for social media engagement, online relevance, or personal gratification.

According to the police, the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The Edo State Police Command also urged members of the public to verify information from credible sources before sharing and to refrain from using social media platforms to spread falsehoods capable of disturbing public peace and order.

The police had earlier debunked reports alleging the kidnapping of students of Green Park Academy, Aduwawa, and Western Boys’ College, Ikpoba Hill, describing the claims as false and misleading.
