Benin City, Nigeria – July 2025 – As part of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s “Clean Edo” vision, the newly appointed Managing Director of the Edo State Waste Management Board, Mr. Lucky Enehita‑Inegbenehi, has been leading a strategic overhaul of the state’s sanitation and environmental infrastructure. Working closely with the governor’s office and supported by Chief Press Secretary Fred Itua, Mr. Enehita‑Inegbenehi is transforming waste management in Edo State, cultivating healthier communities and enabling sustainable development.

📌 Key Milestones and Strategic Deployment

  • 100‑Day Cleanliness Initiative: Within his first three months, the waste board deployed advanced sanitation equipment—including tippers, payloaders, and tractors—resulting in the clearing of major roads (e.g., Benin‑Auchi and Benin‑Agbor routes) and public markets. This achievement underscores Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to environmental rejuvenation.

  • Prosecution of Defaulters: More than 160 individuals responsible for illegal dumping have been prosecuted, receiving either fines or mandatory community service. These actions send a strong message that waste-related infractions will not be tolerated.

  • Roving Enforcement Teams: Surveillance units, equipped with cameras, now patrol known dumping hotspots as early as 2 a.m., helping to deter environmental neglect and promote accountability.

🌍 Community Sensitisation Drives

Mr. Enehita‑Inegbenehi has personally led outreach campaigns across residential areas. Recent efforts include by‑street education on proper waste disposal methods—for example, during visits to Ogbiean Street off Ekehuan Road—reinforcing best practices and community responsibility.

♻️ Planning for a Circular Economy

In alignment with Edo State’s broader sustainability goals, the waste board is partnering with experts from India to establish a waste recycling plant. This marks a significant step toward converting refuse into resources, reducing landfill reliance, and creating economic value.

🤝 Governor’s Backing & Institutional Autonomy

Governor Okpebholo granted Mr. Enehita‑Inegbenehi full autonomy to fulfil the board’s mandate. With institutional support, procurement of new machinery, and swift termination of underperforming contractors (13 so far, with an additional 37 under review), the board is functioning with renewed efficiency.

🏆 Enabling Safe, Sustainable Growth

  • Health and Infrastructure Synergy: Clearing waste from urban and rural roads directly complements Dr. Enehita‑Inegbenehi’s work under Governor Okpebholo to enhance public health, drive infrastructure projects, and instil civic pride.

  • Security through Cleanliness: Cleaner public spaces naturally deter crime by increasing visibility and community engagement—a benefit highlighted by CPS Fred Itua in government communications.

  • Foundation for Long-Term Investments: With a functional solid-waste system in place, Edo State is now better positioned to attract commercial, industrial, and residential developments that prioritise environmental sustainability.

🗣️ Into the Future: Strengthening Collaboration

Mr. Enehita‑Inegbenehi and his team are preparing the public for expanded services, including:

  1. Rollout of recycling facilities in partnership with foreign specialists.

  2. Regular community workshops and clean-up initiatives across Edo’s 18 local government areas.

  3. Ongoing enforcement efforts, complemented by public feedback systems.

Supported by effective media management from CPS Fred Itua, these clean-environment initiatives are being communicated transparently, fostering citizen participation and solidifying the narrative of an Edo State united in progress under Sen. Okpebholo.

🔍 Conclusion

Through strategic leadership, community engagement, and institutional support, Mr. Lucky Enehita‑Inegbenehi is actualising a cleaner, healthier environment that enables Edo State’s overarching vision for growth and security. With Governor Okpebholo’s backing and media outreach led by CPS Itua, Edo is on course to embody renewed pride, and its landscapes, infrastructure, and civic health reflect that transformative journey.
