  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

Residents of Edo State have appealed to Governor Monday Okpebholo to sustain his administration’s commitment to healthcare development by following through on his pledge to support the construction of a ₦2.5 billion Paediatric Complex at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

The appeal followed the recent fuel tanker explosion along the Benin–Lagos Highway, which brought renewed attention to the need for adequate medical facilities to manage emergencies and provide specialised treatment for patients, including children.

Speaking with journalists during the governor’s visit to survivors receiving treatment at UBTH over the weekend, Mrs. Grace Amayo said the proposed complex would strengthen paediatric healthcare services and improve access to specialised treatment for children in Edo State and neighbouring communities.

Amayo also commended the Chief Medical Director of UBTH, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, for efforts to restore the hospital’s Burns and Plastic Surgery Ward, describing the development as an important step towards improving the hospital’s capacity to treat patients with severe burns.

She noted that the ward, originally built by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), had experienced years of neglect before being remodelled and restored under the current hospital management.

According to her, the rehabilitation of the facility highlights the importance of sustained investment in healthcare infrastructure and the need for continued collaboration between hospital management and government authorities.

The Oluku tanker explosion, she added, underscored the importance of maintaining functional medical facilities capable of responding to emergencies involving multiple casualties.

Amayo urged the state government to work with relevant stakeholders to advance the proposed paediatric project, noting that its completion would contribute to the long-term development of specialised healthcare services in the state.

She said the governor’s pledge presented an opportunity to strengthen existing healthcare infrastructure and expand services for children who require specialised medical attention.

“The proposed Paediatric Complex would be an important addition to UBTH’s healthcare services. We appeal to the governor to sustain the commitment and work towards its realisation so that children can benefit from improved access to specialised care,” Amayo said.

Governor Okpebholo, accompanied by Senator Adams Oshiomhole and other government officials, visited UBTH over the weekend to assess the condition of survivors of the Oluku tanker explosion who were receiving treatment at the hospital.

During the visit, Prof. Ize-Iyamu briefed the delegation on the medical condition and recovery of the patients. The survivors were among 11 people initially admitted following the incident, according to the information provided by the hospital management.

The governor expressed sympathy with the victims and extended condolences to families who lost loved ones in the disaster. He also pledged assistance to those affected by the incident.

The visit has drawn attention to the immediate medical needs of the survivors and broader questions about the capacity of healthcare facilities to respond to emergencies.

While the hospital continues to provide care for affected patients, residents have called for sustained investment in medical infrastructure, including the proposed Paediatric Complex.

The project’s implementation would depend on the next steps taken by the relevant authorities, including any formal arrangements, funding commitments and construction timelines.

As discussions continue, residents say they hope the governor’s pledge will translate into a project that strengthens paediatric healthcare delivery at UBTH and benefits children across Edo State and beyond.

Oba Ewuare II Adopts 8-Year-Old Chess Prodigy, Pledges Royal Support Reported by Musa Antiketu,| Journalist at Obaland magazine. BENIN CITY, Edo State — The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has pledged royal support for eight-year-old chess player Emmanuela Iyobosa Omoragbon, declaring her a child of the palace and directing officials to monitor her education, welfare and progress in the game. The monarch made the announcement during the opening of the Royal Rapid Chess Classic 2026 at the Benin Palace. He performed the ceremonial first move alongside the young player at the event organised as part of activities marking the 10th anniversary of his coronation. Oba Ewuare II instructed palace chiefs in the administrative arm to obtain the child’s details from her mother, Mrs Doris Omoragbon, a national chess champion and senior player with the Edo State Sports Commission. The monarch said the palace would follow Emmanuela’s development in chess, education and general welfare, adding that her parents should inform him of any challenges requiring royal intervention. Describing chess as a game that demands intellectual discipline, strategic thinking and concentration, the Oba said it was often misunderstood as similar to draughts. He explained that chess develops analytical skills, strengthens decision-making and encourages players to anticipate situations before acting. According to the monarch, these qualities make the game particularly relevant to military leaders, policymakers and administrators, whose responsibilities require planning and sound judgment. The gesture places renewed attention on the importance of identifying and supporting young sporting talents. Emmanuela, who plays chess with the Edo State Sports Commission, is a Primary Two pupil at Oman Christian Academy in Benin City. Her mother expressed gratitude for the monarch’s intervention, saying she was overwhelmed by the announcement and would share the news with her husband and the rest of the family. The report also stated that the monarch presented a royal gift of ₦250,000 to Mrs Omoragbon. Chess players and students from Edo College who visited the palace reportedly received a combined royal gift of ₦2 million. The Oba further promised a personal royal gift for Emmanuela. The monarch also announced additional royal prizes for winners of the competition, who are expected to receive royal souvenirs at the grand finale scheduled for November 21, 2026.à Following the palace ceremony, the tournament continued at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub on Airport Road in Benin City. Organisers reported that 126 of the 130 registered players attended, representing 10 states. Participating states included Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Oyo, Ondo, Ogun and host state Edo, alongside other participating states. In the open category, the winner stands to receive ₦350,000, while the second- and third-place finishers will receive ₦250,000 and ₦150,000, respectively. Players finishing fourth to tenth will each receive ₦50,000. Additional ₦50,000 prizes have been allocated to the best Edo indigene and the best veteran player. The under-20 category offers ₦100,000 for first place, ₦80,000 for second and ₦50,000 for third, in both the male and female divisions. In the under-14 category, the top three prizes are ₦30,000, ₦20,000 and ₦10,000, respectively. The under-10 category offers ₦25,000, ₦15,000 and ₦10,000. Chess coordinator Augustine Apemiye thanked the Oba for including the game in the coronation anniversary programme. He disclosed that approval was being sought to establish the Oba Ewuare II Chess Club, which would provide children in the palace with opportunities to learn chess. He also offered to bring experienced chess champions to train them. The proposed club could help extend access to chess training among young people in Benin City, although its establishment remains subject to the monarch’s approval. Oba Ewuare II’s pledge to support Emmanuela highlights the potential role of traditional institutions in encouraging education, intellectual development and youth participation in sport. The tournament also provides a platform for players from different states to compete and develop their skills. For Emmanuela, the royal commitment represents an opportunity to pursue chess alongside her education, with the palace promising to monitor her progress and welfare.
