FA Rejects Arsenal Appeal Against Max Dowman’s Red Card as Teenager Faces Three Match Ban.
The Football Association (FA) has rejected Arsenal’s appeal against the dismissal of teenage midfielder Max Dowman, confirming that the 16 year old will serve a three-match suspension following his red card during the club’s Carabao Cup defeat to Fleetwood Town.
The decision, announced on Thursday, October 29, 2026, means Arsenal will be without the young player for their next three domestic fixtures after an independent regulatory commission dismissed the club’s claims of wrongful dismissal and excessive punishment. The commission’s written reasons for its decision are expected to be published later.
Dowman was sent off in the 85th minute of Tuesday’s Carabao Cup fourth round encounter at Fleetwood Town after an incident involving Fleetwood midfielder Harrison Neal. The teenager reacted following a heavy challenge, making contact with Neal with his leg in an incident that led referee Michael Salisbury to show him a straight red card for violent conduct.
Arsenal subsequently challenged the decision, arguing that the dismissal and resulting suspension were unjustified. However, the FA’s independent commission rejected both grounds of appeal, leaving the original disciplinary decision unchanged.
The incident occurred during a disappointing evening for Arsenal, who were eliminated from the competition after losing 5–3 on penalties following a 1–1 draw against the League Two side. The result marked a significant upset, with Fleetwood advancing to the next round at the expense of the Premier League club.
The suspension is expected to rule Dowman out of Arsenal’s domestic matches against Liverpool, Hull City and Newcastle United. However, because the ban applies to domestic competitions, he remains eligible for the club’s UEFA Champions League fixture against Slavia Prague on November 4, subject to selection by manager Mikel Arteta.
The decision also presents a challenge for Arsenal as they prepare for a demanding run of fixtures. The club has faced concerns over the availability of several attacking players, increasing the importance of squad depth as the team balances its domestic and European commitments.
Dowman’s dismissal has also drawn attention to the disciplinary challenges facing young players competing at senior level. While the teenager’s response to the challenge resulted in a significant sporting consequence, the FA’s decision reinforces the importance of maintaining discipline and controlling reactions during competitive matches.
For Arsenal, the immediate focus will be on managing the suspension and maintaining momentum across competitions. Dowman, meanwhile, will have to wait until the ban is completed before returning to domestic action.
