  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

FG Disburses ₦5.15 Trillion to Military Amid Persistent Insecurity Across Nigeria

The Federal Government has disbursed ₦5.15 trillion in special intervention funds to the Nigerian military and related security agencies between November 2023 and September 2026, as the country continues to grapple with terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats.

An analysis of documents from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), obtained showed that the government received ₦5.65 trillion into a dedicated special intervention account during the period, out of which ₦5.15 trillion, representing 91.15%, had been disbursed.

The funds were sourced from the Federation Account and other government revenue streams, including non-oil revenue and transfers from the FAAC Withheld Account.

According to the document titled Ledger of Special Intervention Programme for Nigerian Military September 2026, prepared by the Federation Account Department of the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, the disbursements were made through 30 payment transactions between November 8, 2023, and September 23, 2026.

The document was presented to the Technical Sub-Committee of FAAC at its meeting in Abuja on October 14, 2026.

The intervention funding was separate from the regular annual budgetary allocations to the Ministry of Defence and other security institutions, indicating additional financial resources committed by the government to security operations.

The records showed that the intervention programme initially operated with monthly allocations of about ₦100 billion, a funding pattern largely maintained throughout 2024 and much of 2025.

Between January and December 2024, the account received and disbursed ₦1.2 trillion, bringing cumulative receipts and payments to ₦1.5 trillion by the end of that year.

During the first nine months of 2025, another ₦900 billion was received and disbursed, bringing cumulative payments to ₦2.4 trillion by September 2025.

However, the funding arrangement changed considerably in 2026, with individual transfers increasing from the previous ₦100 billion pattern to amounts ranging between ₦200 billion and ₦500 billion.

The records indicated that the intervention account received ₦3.25 trillion in 2026 as of October 14, compared with ₦1.2 trillion throughout 2024.

Payments recorded in 2026 amounted to ₦2.75 trillion, representing approximately 53.40 per cent of the total ₦5.15 trillion disbursed since the programme commenced.

The amount released in 2026 alone also exceeded the combined ₦2.4 trillion disbursed between November 2023 and September 2025.

Despite the substantial financial commitment, the FAAC ledger did not provide a detailed breakdown of the specific military operations, equipment procurement, personnel expenses or security projects financed through the intervention programme.

The absence of such details leaves important questions about how the funds were distributed among security agencies and the specific operational outcomes achieved with the additional resources.

Meanwhile, Nigeria continues to face multiple security challenges, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry and mass kidnappings in parts of the North-West and North-Central regions, as well as other violent crimes affecting communities across the country.

The continued security challenges have placed pressure on the government to strengthen military operations, improve intelligence gathering, enhance logistics and protect vulnerable communities.

The FAAC records also showed that ₦500 billion remained in the intervention account following the latest recorded transfer on October 14, 2026. The amount had not been reflected as a corresponding disbursement in the ledger and should therefore not be regarded as money already released to security agencies.

The figures highlight the scale of additional government spending on national security, while the effectiveness, transparency and measurable impact of the intervention remain important issues for public scrutiny.

The Federal Government has disbursed ₦5.15 trillion in special intervention funds to Nigeria’s military and security agencies between November 2023 and September 2026 amid persistent insecurity.
