FG Moves to Enforce Lower Transport Fares Through CNG Initiative as Commuters Await Relief.

The Federal Government has intensified efforts to reduce transportation costs across Nigeria by engaging state governors, transport unions and commercial fleet operators to ensure that savings from Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) translate into lower fares for commuters.

The initiative forms part of the government’s National Affordable CNG Transit Programme, designed to ease the financial burden of transportation by expanding the use of CNG powered buses and other commercial vehicles.

According to a report published by Times Nigeria on October 13, 2026, the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi CNG & EV) is working with state governments and transport operators to establish designated routes and enforce approved fares for vehicles operating under the programme.

FG Introduces Measures to Improve Fare Transparency

As part of the enforcement strategy, the government plans to introduce stickers displaying designated routes and approved fares on buses deployed under its CNG initiative.

The measure is intended to help passengers identify official routes, know the applicable fares before boarding and report potential overcharging by operators.

Onyekachi Eke, Head of Brand and Communications at Pi-CNG & EV, said the initiative was engaging state governors, commercial fleet operators and transport unions to establish practical arrangements for implementing the presidential directive.

The engagements are also expected to help authorities identify priority transport corridors and determine how the programme can be implemented according to the needs of individual states.

However, specific penalties for operators who disregard approved fares have not been publicly established in the report, leaving questions about how compliance will be monitored and enforced across the country.

CNG Adoption Offers Potential for Cheaper Transportation

The government’s strategy relies on the potential cost advantages of CNG over petrol and diesel. By lowering fuel expenses for participating commercial vehicles, the initiative aims to create room for operators to reduce fares without undermining their businesses.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had previously directed state governments to accelerate the programme following discussions with governors of Nigeria’s 36 states on August 27, 2026.

In an update published on September 19, Tinubu said the objective was to ensure that more Nigerians experienced measurable reductions in transportation costs from October 1.

He urged state governments to work with transport unions and commercial operators, support vehicle conversions and fleet deployment, and facilitate the infrastructure required to expand affordable transportation.

The President also cited existing interventions in several states, including CNG powered and electric public transport services in Borno State, where some routes were reportedly charging between ₦50 and ₦100, compared with ₦300 to ₦600 charged by commercial operators on the same routes.

Implementation Remains Uneven Across States

Despite the government’s efforts, the benefits of the initiative have yet to reach every commuter.

The October 13 News reports across several states, indicated that implementation remained uneven, with some passengers still waiting for fare reductions despite investments in alternative energy transportation.

The report also highlighted reductions on designated routes in Abuja and other locations, including Borno, Enugu, Niger and Abia states.

These developments suggest that while lower-cost energy can support more affordable transport, the extent of the relief commuters receive depends on effective implementation, cooperation from operators and the availability of supporting infrastructure.

The programme’s success will therefore depend not only on converting vehicles to CNG but also on ensuring that operators pass the resulting savings on to passengers.

Infrastructure and Accountability Remain Critical

Expanding CNG-powered transportation requires more than the availability of vehicles. Reliable refuelling stations, accredited conversion centres, certified equipment and effective safety oversight are essential to sustaining the transition.

In September, the Presidential Initiative on CNG and Electric Vehicles reiterated the importance of using accredited conversion centres and certified equipment following a vehicle cylinder explosion in Abuja involving an uncertified cylinder.

Beyond safety, the government must ensure that approved fares are clearly communicated, operators comply with the programme’s requirements and commuters have accessible channels for reporting violations.

Transparent monitoring will also be important in determining whether fare reductions remain sustainable as fuel prices, operating expenses and demand for public transportation change.

Outlook: Will Nigerians See Lasting Fare Reductions?

The Federal Government’s renewed engagement with governors, transport unions and fleet operators represents an effort to move the CNG initiative from vehicle conversion and infrastructure development towards measurable benefits for passengers.

For commuters facing persistent pressure from transportation costs, the key test will be whether the programme delivers consistent and affordable fares across more routes and states.

Ultimately, the initiative’s effectiveness will be measured not by the number of vehicles converted or buses deployed, but by how much Nigerians save on their daily journeys and whether those savings can be sustained.
