Reported by Musa Antiketu,| Journalist at Obaland magazine.

GOMBE, Nigeria — The political landscape in Gombe State is witnessing another significant realignment ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, following reports that two senior executives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Pantami Ward, Gombe Local Government Area, have defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The reported movement involving the ward’s chairman and legal adviser is expected to attract considerable attention within the state’s political circles, particularly because it comes amid an increasingly fluid contest between the APC and PDP following the defection of former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, from the APC to the PDP.

If confirmed, the reported departure of the two ward-level APC officials would represent a notable development in the ongoing political restructuring around Pantami Ward and could further deepen the debate over the strength of the APC’s grassroots organisation in Gombe.

The development also comes at a time when political parties in the state are positioning themselves for what is expected to be a competitive 2027 governorship contest. Pantami, who subsequently secured the PDP governorship ticket, has emerged as one of the central figures in the state’s evolving political equation.

The reported defections underscore the importance of grassroots party structures in Nigerian politics, where ward executives often serve as the foundation for mobilisation, membership registration, campaign coordination and electoral organisation.

However, the development should be viewed within the broader context of the political contest in Gombe rather than as an isolated party switch.

Pantami’s Defection Reshapes Gombe’s Political Calculus

The political atmosphere in Gombe changed considerably after Pantami left the APC and moved to the PDP.

Pantami, a former federal minister and prominent political figure from the state, later emerged as the PDP’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election. BusinessDay reported in May that he secured the PDP ticket through voice affirmation at the party’s governorship primary in Gombe after his departure from the APC.

His transition to the PDP has since become one of the most consequential political developments in the state, with supporters and opponents interpreting the move as a major shift in the balance of political influence ahead of 2027.

The development has also triggered disagreements over the circumstances surrounding his departure from the APC.

The Sun reported in June that APC executives in Pantami Ward had questioned whether Pantami formally resigned from the party before joining the PDP. According to the report, the ward’s deputy chairman, Yaya Isa, and secretary, Ibrahim Muhammad, said they had not been officially informed of his resignation and had not received a resignation letter.

A separate report by Leadership, however, presented a conflicting account, quoting Pantami Ward APC Chairman Alhaji Bala Galda as saying that he had received Pantami’s resignation letter on May 19, 2026. The report also stated that the party’s legal adviser, Babangida Gololo, had seen the document.

The conflicting accounts illustrate the political tensions surrounding Pantami’s departure and the significance of his former party structure.

Against this backdrop, the reported defection of the ward chairman and legal adviser to the PDP would represent another layer in an already complex political situation.

Grassroots Defections Carry Political Weight

In Nigeria’s electoral system, the importance of ward-level political structures cannot be understated.

Political parties depend heavily on ward executives to maintain membership networks, organise meetings, coordinate local mobilisation and connect party leadership with voters. Consequently, the movement of senior ward officials from one party to another can have symbolic and organisational implications.

However, political defections do not automatically translate into electoral victories.

The real impact of any defection depends on whether the movement is followed by a broader transfer of supporters and whether the defectors retain influence within their communities.

For the PDP, the reported development could strengthen its grassroots organisation in a strategically important part of Gombe, particularly as the party seeks to consolidate the political momentum generated by Pantami’s candidacy.

For the APC, the reported movement could raise questions about party cohesion at the ward level, although the ultimate electoral consequences would depend on the scale of the defections and the party’s ability to rebuild and maintain its local structures.

The APC has continued to maintain a strong political presence in Gombe State, where the party controls the state government. The PDP, meanwhile, is seeking to challenge that dominance through its 2027 campaign.

The emerging contest therefore reflects a broader pattern in Nigerian politics, where politicians and political supporters frequently realign ahead of major elections based on changing alliances, candidate selection and calculations about electoral prospects.

PDP Builds Momentum Around Pantami

The reported Pantami Ward defections come amid a series of political movements involving the PDP and supporters of Pantami.

In June, The Sun reported that more than 1,800 members of the APC and Labour Party defected to the PDP in Gombe, with the development linked to growing political activity around Pantami’s 2027 governorship ambition. The report said the defectors included political supporters and individuals associated with party structures in different parts of the state.

The PDP has also attracted high-profile individuals who previously contested or participated in other political platforms.

Punch reported in July that Kelmi Lazarus, a former Social Democratic Party governorship candidate in Gombe State, defected to the PDP and declared support for Pantami ahead of the 2027 governorship election. Lazarus reportedly said his decision followed consultations with his supporters.

These developments suggest that the PDP is attempting to construct a broad coalition around its governorship candidate.

Yet the party’s path is not without challenges.

Pantami’s emergence as the PDP candidate generated opposition from some aspirants within the party. TheCable reported that two PDP governorship aspirants, Hamisu Mailantarki and Usman Garry, rejected Pantami’s emergence, arguing that he had not undergone the required screening process.

The dispute highlights a familiar feature of Nigerian politics: the ability of a major political figure to attract new supporters can simultaneously create tensions among existing party stakeholders.

For the PDP, maintaining unity among its established members and newly arrived supporters will be crucial as the 2027 election approaches.

APC Faces a More Competitive 2027 Environment

The reported movement in Pantami Ward is unfolding against a wider pattern of political competition in Gombe.

The APC has also recorded defections from opposition parties in the state. Premium Times reported in March that executive members of the SDP, NNPP and Labour Party in Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area defected to the APC. The defectors were formally received by Inuwa Garba, a member of the House of Representatives representing Yamaltu/Deba Federal Constituency.

Similarly, reports in June indicated that political stakeholders from the PDP, African Democratic Congress and Labour Party had moved to the APC and declared support for the ruling party’s political interests ahead of 2027.

These opposing movements demonstrate that Gombe’s political landscape is not experiencing a one-directional shift.

Rather, both major parties are actively seeking to attract political figures, grassroots organisers and influential supporters as the 2027 electoral cycle gathers momentum.

The situation reinforces the importance of looking beyond individual defections when assessing the strength of political parties.

A politician’s movement from one party to another may generate headlines, but the long-term electoral effect depends on several factors, including the politician’s personal following, the strength of local party structures, voter sentiment, campaign organisation and the ability of the receiving party to integrate new members.

Political Defections and the 2027 Contest

The growing number of defections in Gombe reflects a national trend in Nigerian politics, where party alliances often become fluid as elections approach.

In many cases, politicians justify defections by citing internal democracy, fairness, political inclusion, leadership disagreements or the need to support candidates they believe can deliver development.

However, defections are also frequently viewed by political observers as strategic calculations influenced by electoral opportunities and changing power dynamics.

The challenge for voters is therefore to evaluate political movements based on policy, performance and public interest rather than simply the number of politicians changing party platforms.

For Gombe State, the 2027 election is likely to be shaped by more than party defections.

Issues such as economic development, employment, education, healthcare, security, infrastructure and governance will remain important considerations for voters.

The ability of political parties to present credible programmes and demonstrate a commitment to accountability will ultimately be as important as the strength of their political alliances.

The PDP will be seeking to convert the momentum around Pantami into a credible statewide campaign, while the APC will be expected to defend its political base and present a compelling case for continuity.

What the Reported Defections Could Mean

If the reported defection of the Pantami Ward APC chairman and legal adviser is formally confirmed, the development could carry political and symbolic significance.

First, it would suggest that Pantami’s transition to the PDP has affected not only individual supporters but also elements of the local political structure associated with his former party.

Second, it could strengthen the PDP’s organisational presence in Pantami Ward at a time when the party is attempting to consolidate its position ahead of the 2027 election.

Third, the development could intensify internal discussions within the APC about grassroots mobilisation and party cohesion.

Nevertheless, caution is necessary in interpreting the development.

Political defections are common in Nigeria, and their electoral consequences are not always predictable. A high-profile defection may generate considerable public attention without producing a corresponding shift in voting behaviour.

The electorate remains the decisive factor.

Ultimately, voters in Gombe will determine whether the political realignments taking place ahead of 2027 translate into meaningful electoral change.

As the campaign season progresses, more politicians and supporters are likely to reconsider their affiliations, particularly as parties finalise their strategies and candidates build statewide networks.

For now, the reported movement of two key APC executives in Pantami Ward adds another dimension to the unfolding political contest in Gombe.

It also reinforces the growing significance of Pantami’s defection and the PDP’s decision to build its 2027 governorship campaign around the former minister.

With both the APC and PDP actively strengthening their structures, Gombe is emerging as one of the states where political realignment could play a significant role in shaping the 2027 electoral narrative.

For Obaland Magazine, the development is best understood as part of a wider political process that will continue to evolve in the months ahead. The real test will not be the number of defections announced at political gatherings, but whether these movements translate into stronger grassroots organisation, credible policy alternatives and, ultimately, the confidence of Gombe’s electorate at the ballot box.
