Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has announced plans to establish a military base in Bagudo Local Government Area as part of intensified efforts to address recent bandit attacks and strengthen security across affected communities.
Governor Idris disclosed the plan on Saturday during a condolence visit to the District Head of Kaoje, Alhaji Mustapha Usman Adamu, following attacks that claimed the lives of the Village Head of Lafagu and other residents.
The governor said the state government was working with security agencies to confront armed groups operating in the area and restore security to communities affected by the violence. He also assured displaced residents that efforts were being made to facilitate their safe return to their homes.
Idris further visited Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, where he expressed sympathy to victims and reiterated his administration’s commitment to their safety, welfare and eventual return to their ancestral communities.
The governor urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information about suspicious movements and activities. He also cautioned against taking the law into their own hands.
The proposed military presence comes against the wider backdrop of persistent security challenges in Kebbi State. A recent analysis documented attacks and security operations across several parts of the state, including incidents involving armed groups in Kebbi South.
The establishment of a military base in Bagudo is therefore expected to form part of broader security measures aimed at improving the protection of vulnerable communities, strengthening rapid response capabilities and creating conditions for displaced residents to return safely.
However, sustained security gains will depend not only on military deployment but also on effective intelligence gathering, coordination among security agencies, community cooperation and measures addressing the vulnerability of rural communities.
The development comes as security remains a major national concern, with the Federal Government also pursuing a broader National Threat Assessment and a five-year Strategic Defence Operations Plan designed to improve coordination among Nigeria’s defence, intelligence and security institutions.
For residents of Bagudo and neighbouring communities, the immediate priority remains the restoration of security, protection of lives and property, and the creation of conditions that allow normal economic and social activities to resume.
