Students and staff of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education in Rivers State were thrown into panic after suspected members of rival cult groups engaged in a violent confrontation on the institution’s campus.

The incident occurred on Monday, April 7, 2025, at the university’s Iwofe/Rumuolumeni campus in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, with reports of gunshots forcing students to flee to safety. Security operatives subsequently arrested one suspected cult member in connection with the confrontation.

According to reports by Punch, The Guardian, The Sun and Daily Independent, the clash involved suspected members of the Vikings and Black Axe, also known as Aye, confraternities. The confrontation was reportedly linked to a longstanding supremacy and territorial dispute between the groups, with the latest incident believed to have been triggered by a reprisal over an earlier attack.

The Guardian reported that members of the Black Axe group allegedly entered the campus in search of members of the Vikings confraternity following an earlier attack on one of its executives in August 2024. During the ensuing confrontation, a suspect was apprehended by campus security personnel and handed over to the police. Reports from Punch and Daily Independent said a Beretta pistol was recovered from the suspect, although The Sun noted that the police did not independently confirm the firearm recovery.

The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the arrest, with its spokesperson, Superintendent Grace Iringe Koko, saying the suspect remained in custody while investigations continued. She also stated that security measures had been strengthened to prevent a breakdown of law and order and that normalcy had returned to the institution.

The latest confrontation adds to longstanding concerns over cult-related violence in parts of Nigeria’s tertiary education system. Ignatius Ajuru University of Education has previously experienced reported incidents involving suspected cult groups, underscoring the continuing security challenges faced by universities in addressing violent confraternities and protecting students and staff.

For students and university authorities, the incident highlights the importance of sustained security surveillance, effective intelligence gathering and firm enforcement of anti cultism measures to prevent rival group disputes from escalating into violence within educational institutions.
