Gunmen killed a serving soldier and injured another in the early hours of Monday at a private dredging site in Magbon Etido, Mowe, Obafemi-Owode LGA, Ogun State.
The attack sparked panic in the Mowe/Ibafo axis. A viral video showed the bloodied body of a soldier in camouflage being evacuated in a pick-up van alongside police officers and civilians.
Major Idereghi Samuel, Army Public Relations Officer for 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala Barracks, confirmed the attack involving military personnel but said full details were still being gathered.
The Ogun State Police Command later described the incident as “an isolated criminal attack and not a banditry operation.” In a statement by spokesperson DSP Babaseyi, police said one soldier died on duty while another is receiving treatment
Police and military operatives have launched coordinated operations to apprehend the attackers, with investigations ongoing and security presence reinforced in the area.
Local officials dispute reports of banditry. Ajumoni CDC Chairman, Mr. Jimoh Owolabi, said in a viral audio that the attackers were kidnappers targeting a prominent sand miner known as “Kapo,” and that resistance from the miner’s security led to the clash.
