Houthis Claim Missile Strike on Saudi Arabia as Red Sea Tensions Escalate

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed a missile attack on southern Saudi Arabia early Saturday, hours after vowing to retaliate for Saudi strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen. The exchange marks a dangerous escalation in a conflict that is now spilling further into the Red Sea.

The Houthis’ Ansarollah media channel said on Telegram that a “Yemeni missile strike” had caused fires in Jizan, a Red Sea port city in southwestern Saudi Arabia. Saudi authorities did not immediately confirm the claim.

However, Riyadh’s civil defense agency issued brief warnings to residents in Jizan and Yanbu early Saturday for “potential danger,” before lifting them minutes later. Similar alerts have been used in the past when missiles or drones were fired toward the kingdom.

The Houthi statement came a day after the Saudi-led coalition said it had hit Houthi military sites in response to attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

According to a Yemeni security source who spoke to AFP, Friday’s Saudi strikes targeted a naval base in the port city of Hodeida and a military camp on Kamaran Island. The Houthis’ al-Masirah TV reported that a telecommunications building near Hodeida port and the naval base at Ras al-Kathib were also hit.

Two people were reportedly wounded — a worker in Hodeida and a woman on Kamaran Island.

The coalition said the strikes were aimed at destroying targets that threatened commercial vessels.

Tensions spiked this week after the Houthis announced a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia and claimed attacks on two Saudi ships.

On Monday, the rebels warned in a radio message to ships that they would target vessels “belonging to the Saudi enemy” that did not comply with the blockade.

Saudi state media, citing a transport authority official, confirmed that a vessel belonging to a Saudi company, the _NCC MASA_, was hit in the Red Sea on Friday. The report said the ship suffered minor hull damage and continued on its course.

The Houthis have been fighting Yemen’s internationally recognized government since 2014. That war has killed hundreds of thousands of people and created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. A UN-brokered truce reached in 2022 has largely held, but the latest attacks threaten to collapse it.

Iran has imposed a parallel blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, Riyadh’s other main maritime route for oil exports. That has forced Saudi Arabia to rely heavily on its Red Sea terminals.

According to shipping data from Kpler, 100% of Saudi seaborne crude exports left from the Red Sea port of Yanbu in April and May. The port accounted for 92% of exports in June and 78% so far in July.

With Hormuz largely closed and the Red Sea now under threat, Saudi oil shipments face pressure from both sides.

The broader regional war also intensified earlier this year following US-Israeli strikes on Tehran in February. The Houthis have framed their actions as part of that wider confrontation.

The Houthis have called Saudi Arabia’s strikes a “dangerous escalation” and said the attacks “will not go unanswered.” Saturday’s claimed missile strike on Jizan appears to be the first response.

Saudi Arabia has not commented directly on the missile claim. But the quick civil defense warnings and the coalition’s strikes on Hodeida signal that Riyadh is preparing for more exchangesHouthis Claim Missile Strike on Saudi Arabia as Red Sea Tensions Escalate

Analysts say the risk now is that the Yemen conflict, which had been contained by the 2022 truce, becomes fully tied to the wider Middle East war. With Red Sea shipping lanes under attack and oil exports rerouted through vulnerable waters, the economic fallout could be immediate.

For Yemen, it means more strikes, more civilian risk, and less chance of a return to peace talks. For the region, it means another front has opened — this time on one of the world’s most important shipping lanes
