‎”I Didn’t Want High BP” — Tinubu Recounts Final Tension

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has revealed that he initially avoided watching the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) between Nigeria and Morocco out of fear for his health.

‎“Honestly, I didn’t want to watch the match. I didn’t want high blood pressure,” Tinubu confessed while receiving the victorious Super Falcons at the Presidential Villa on Monday.

‎“But our people came in and turned my TV to that channel. When it was 2-0, I got very offended and restless. But I kept watching the indomitable spirit of resilience, determination, and courage.”

‎The President said he was encouraged when Nigeria pulled a goal back, describing the moment as uplifting for both him and the entire country.

‎“And after that penalty, and I saw a 2-1, my spirit was lifted, and I believe that of the nation too was lifted,” he said.

‎Tinubu also shared a humorous moment involving the First Lady, who was so engrossed in the match that she almost abandoned his dinner.

‎ “What you almost did was get me hungrier, because your mother was in the kitchen, almost abandoning my dinner. The game that she doesn’t usually watch except when the girls are playing she came running: ‘We have won’. I said, ‘You have not yet won!’”

‎The President then conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on each player and member of the technical team for their historic 10th WAFCON title. He also announced a cash reward of $100,000 (naira equivalent) for each of the 24 players and $50,000 for the technical crew.

‎Additionally, Tinubu approved the allocation of a three-bedroom apartment to each squad and technical team member.

‎“You have inspired millions, especially young girls who now see the proof that their dreams are valid and achievable. You inspired me too,” Tinubu said.

‎“You represent that hope. You ignited our hope, and we will continue to encourage you and generations after you.”
