  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

INEC Urges Police to Protect 232,000 Voters With Disabilities Ahead of 2027 Elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to strengthen measures to protect persons with disabilities against intimidation, discrimination and electoral violence ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

The commission warned that insecurity, inaccessible polling units and inadequate security arrangements could prevent eligible voters with disabilities from exercising their constitutional right to vote freely and safely.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, made the call on Friday, October 23, during a high level technical engagement on disability inclusive election security and protection protocols in Abuja.

The meeting brought together representatives of security agencies, the European Union, disability rights organisations and other stakeholders to discuss practical measures for improving electoral safety and accessibility.

According to News reports published on October 23, the discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between electoral authorities, security agencies and disability rights groups to ensure that vulnerable voters can participate in the electoral process without fear.

INEC Identifies 232,000 Registered Voters With Disabilities

Amupitan disclosed that INEC had identified approximately 232,000 registered voters with disabilities, representing about 0.23 per cent of the national voters’ register.

He said the figure highlighted the need for stronger efforts to improve electoral inclusion and remove barriers that could discourage persons with disabilities from registering or participating in elections.

The commission has identified different disability categories, including visual and hearing impairments, physical disabilities and other conditions requiring specific forms of assistance.

Amupitan stressed that electoral credibility should not be measured solely by the organisation of voting and the counting of ballots but also by whether every eligible citizen can participate safely, independently and without discrimination.

He noted that the commission’s regulations and guidelines provide for priority access, appropriate assistance and assistive voting materials for persons with disabilities.

INEC has also introduced online voter registration as part of broader efforts to improve access to the electoral process.

Police Urged to Strengthen Election Security

The INEC chairman called for improved coordination between the commission, the police and other security agencies to prevent intimidation, harassment and violence against voters with disabilities.

He emphasized that election security arrangements must account for the different needs of voters rather than relying exclusively on general security measures.

For example, voters with visual impairments may require verbal guidance, while those with hearing impairments may need accessible visual communication. Voters with limited mobility also require safe access to polling units and voting facilities.

Amupitan cautioned that assistance provided to persons with disabilities must respect their independence, privacy and freedom to make their own electoral choices.

The proposed measures include training security personnel on disability rights, establishing accessible channels for reporting electoral security incidents and improving cooperation among agencies responsible for protecting voters.

These measures are intended to cover the entire electoral process, including voter registration, political campaigns, rallies, election-day activities and the period after voting.

Disability Rights Groups Seek More Inclusive Elections

Disability rights advocates have repeatedly raised concerns about the barriers that prevent persons with disabilities from participating fully in Nigeria’s democratic process.

These challenges include inaccessible polling stations, inadequate transportation, limited access to electoral information, communication difficulties and discriminatory treatment.

During the Abuja engagement, stakeholders called for disability-inclusive security procedures that would protect voters and accredited election observers from intimidation and harassment.

The European Union also emphasized the importance of integrating disability inclusion into security planning, personnel training and emergency response procedures ahead of the 2027 elections.

The discussions form part of broader efforts to ensure that Nigeria’s electoral process accommodates the needs of all eligible citizens.

Implications for Nigeria’s 2027 Elections

Nigeria is preparing for another general election cycle in 2027, making electoral security, accessibility and public confidence important priorities for INEC and other relevant institutions.

Protecting voters with disabilities will require more than policy commitments. Effective implementation will depend on adequate resources, accessible infrastructure, trained personnel and clear procedures for addressing complaints.

INEC and security agencies will also need to ensure that voters can report threats without fear of retaliation and that complaints receive timely responses.

Although the commission has outlined measures to improve inclusion, their effectiveness will ultimately depend on how consistently they are implemented across the country.

Ensuring that persons with disabilities can participate freely and safely is essential to protecting their democratic rights and strengthening public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.
