The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for the prompt release of outstanding funds allocated for the 2027 general elections, stressing the importance of timely financing to its preparations for the polls.
The commission proposed about ₦873.78 billion for the 2027 elections, covering key areas including electoral operations, technology, logistics and capital expenditure. By August 2026, INEC said it had received about 60 per cent of the required funds, leaving a substantial balance still to be released.
The funding issue has become increasingly significant as INEC advances preparations for the elections, including the procurement and replacement of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) equipment, electoral materials, logistics and other operational requirements. The commission has also indicated that some BVAS devices used in previous elections were not recovered, making additional procurement necessary.
INEC’s funding request is also linked to statutory requirements governing election financing. The commission has previously emphasised the importance of releasing election funds within the period prescribed by electoral law to allow adequate planning and implementation of critical activities.
The 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for February 20, 2027, while the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027, according to INEC’s formally released timetable.
Beyond funding, the commission is undertaking several preparatory measures aimed at strengthening the electoral process. These include reviewing its electoral technology, improving system resilience and preparing for comprehensive testing of accreditation, result transmission and result-viewing systems ahead of election day.
The demand for timely funding therefore comes at a critical stage in Nigeria’s electoral calendar. While INEC has continued its preparations, the release of the outstanding allocation would provide the commission with greater financial certainty to complete procurement, logistics and technological preparations without avoidable delays.
For a country preparing for one of its most consequential democratic exercises, adequate and timely funding remains essential to effective election administration, operational readiness and public confidence in the electoral process.
INEC has urged the prompt release of outstanding funds for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections as the commission intensifies preparations for technology, logistics, electoral materials and nationwide operations.
