IOM Commends Okpebholo as Edo Intensifies Fight Against Poverty, Irregular Migration

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has commended the Edo State Government for its proactive efforts in tackling irregular migration, reducing poverty and supporting the reintegration of returning migrants.

The commendation was given by IOM Nigeria’s Chief of Mission, Ms. Dimanche Sharon, during a courtesy visit to Governor Monday Okpebholo at the Government House.

Sharon praised the administration’s commitment to creating opportunities for residents, noting that the government’s policies were helping to ensure that migration becomes a choice rather than a necessity.

She said her visits to 13 states across Nigeria in the past nine months had revealed Edo State’s unique potential and commitment to addressing migration challenges.

“Nigeria has a beautiful story to tell. I pledge to join in highlighting this story and reshaping its narrative internationally,” she said.

According to her, Edo State’s youth empowerment initiatives have already impacted more than 500,000 people through skills development programmes, while over 9,000 returning migrants have received support to reintegrate into society through collaboration with IOM.

Sharon also commended the state’s humanitarian and poverty-reduction programmes, including initiatives such as the EdoJobs Centre, fish farming support schemes and assistance for survivors of gender-based violence.

She added that the organization would explore further partnership opportunities with the state, particularly in linking digital skills training with employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.

Responding, Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to partnering with IOM and other development partners to curb irregular migration and improve the welfare of citizens.

The governor noted that cult-related violence had historically contributed to migration in the state but said the situation had improved significantly.

“In 2024, Edo State was plagued by cult-related violence, leading to over 360 deaths. By 2025, we brought the scourge to near zero, restoring peace and encouraging people to return,” he said.

Okpebholo added that his administration remains focused on sustaining peace and creating a business-friendly environment that will promote economic growth and improve livelihoods.

He also highlighted Edo State’s rich historical heritage, describing it as one of the oldest cities in the world and a destination historically visited by Portuguese and British explorers.

The governor said the trust of the Edo people continues to drive his administration’s commitment to delivering good governance and improving the quality of life across the state.
