Iran Sets Tough Conditions for Hormuz Reopening, Demands US Compensation and End to Military Pressure.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has said the Strait of Hormuz will not be fully reopened until the United States meets Tehran’s conditions, escalating an already difficult dispute over the strategic waterway and the future of US Iran relations.

The latest position, reported on August 8 and 9, comes as Iranian and Omani officials continue discussions over arrangements for commercial shipping through the strait. The IRGC said reopening the waterway would depend on Washington accepting Iran’s demands rather than simply reaching a separate arrangement with Oman.

Among Tehran’s demands are an end to US military actions and threats against Iran and its regional allies, the lifting of sanctions and the US naval blockade, the withdrawal of American forces from the region, the release of frozen Iranian assets and compensation for damages Tehran says it suffered during the conflict.

Iranian officials have also linked the future management of the Strait of Hormuz to their broader demands over navigation, arguing that Tehran must retain a significant role in determining how commercial vessels pass through the waterway. The position reflects a dispute that has persisted throughout the US-Iran conflict, with Washington rejecting any arrangement that would amount to paying Iran for ordinary passage through the strait.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy corridors, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider Arabian Sea. Before the conflict, roughly one fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies moved through the waterway, making prolonged disruption a major concern for energy markets, shipping companies and economies dependent on Gulf energy exports.

The latest standoff also threatens to complicate diplomatic efforts to establish a lasting framework between Tehran and Washington. Previous agreements had provided for the reopening of the waterway and temporary relief measures, including a US waiver allowing Iranian oil exports. However, renewed military confrontations and disagreements over the interpretation of the agreement have undermined those arrangements.

Reuters reported that the IRGC’s latest position means the reopening of Hormuz is not dependent on the ongoing Iran Oman discussions alone, but on whether the United States accepts Iran’s conditions. The development adds another obstacle to efforts aimed at restoring normal commercial traffic through one of the world’s most strategically significant maritime choke points.

Earlier reporting by The Associated Press also documented Tehran’s demand for the lifting of the US blockade and an end to the war as part of an offer to restore access through the waterway. Other international reporting has similarly highlighted Iran’s demands for sanctions relief, the release of frozen assets and compensation as key elements of its negotiating position.

For global markets, the uncertainty surrounding Hormuz remains significant. Any prolonged restriction on shipping could affect oil supplies, freight costs, insurance premiums and consumer prices, while a negotiated reopening could ease some of the pressure on energy and maritime markets.

For now, Tehran’s position indicates that the Strait of Hormuz remains both a critical security issue and a central bargaining instrument in the wider US Iran dispute. Whether Washington will accept any of Iran’s conditions remains uncertain, leaving the prospect of a full and stable reopening of the waterway unresolved.
