Israel Marks Three Years Since October 7 Hamas Attack as Gaza Crisis Deepens.
Israel on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, marked three years since the Hamas-led attack of October 7, 2023, which killed about 1,200 people and resulted in 251 others being taken hostage into Gaza, according to Israeli authorities and international reporting.
Memorial ceremonies and tributes were held across Israel, including at communities near the Gaza border and the site of the Nova music festival, where hundreds of people were killed during the assault. The anniversary is the first since all remaining Israeli hostages and their remains were returned, following exchanges and other developments under the ceasefire framework that took effect in October 2025.
The United Nations said the October 7 attack involved deliberate attacks on civilians and described the abduction of 251 people as a grave trauma for victims, survivors and their families. UN Secretary General António Guterres said the suffering caused by the attack remains deeply felt three years later, while stressing that the violence that followed has also inflicted devastating suffering on Palestinian civilians.
The attack triggered Israel’s prolonged military campaign in Gaza, which has resulted in an enormous Palestinian death toll and widespread destruction. Gaza health authorities say more than 74,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war began, although the figures do not distinguish between civilians and combatants. News outlets have reported the toll while noting the continuing humanitarian consequences of the conflict.
Despite a ceasefire announced in October 2025, the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains severe. A recent United Nations humanitarian assessment reported continuing strikes, displacement, restrictions on essential supplies and critical funding shortages. OCHA said 13 per cent of Gaza’s population was living in flood prone displacement sites or unsafe buildings, while more than 2,300 unsafe structures remained inhabited.
The UN has also warned that the ceasefire has not fully ended violence or delivered adequate humanitarian assistance and a credible recovery process. In a statement ahead of the anniversary, Guterres called for the ceasefire to become permanent, humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza at scale and international law to be respected.
Three years after the events that reshaped Israel, Gaza and the wider Middle East, the anniversary therefore carries two parallel realities: Israelis mourning those killed and remembering the trauma of October 7, while Palestinians continue to confront the consequences of a conflict that has devastated homes, infrastructure and essential services.
The anniversary also comes amid unresolved political and security questions, including disagreements over Gaza’s future, the disarmament of Hamas, Israeli military presence and reconstruction. With major challenges still facing both Israelis and Palestinians, international calls for a durable political settlement and lasting peace remain central to the region’s uncertain future.
