Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has said he has not yet read Cristiano Ronaldo’s lengthy public statement addressing the dispute that led to the veteran forward’s departure from the national team camp.
Ronaldo issued the detailed statement after leaving Portugal’s camp ahead of the UEFA Nations League fixture against Denmark. In it, the 41-year-old captain accused Jesus of breaking an understanding over his playing time and said the disagreement ultimately influenced his decision to leave the squad. Ronaldo also apologised for his actions and maintained that he remains committed to representing Portugal if selected and physically fit.
The dispute began after Ronaldo remained on the bench for the entirety of Portugal’s 2–1 victory over Norway. Jesus had previously indicated that he intended to introduce the forward for around 30 minutes, but later explained that the flow of the match, including Gonçalo Ramos’ performance, led him to change his plans.
Ronaldo subsequently argued that the coach had failed to honour commitments made during discussions involving representatives from his club, Al-Nassr. According to Ronaldo, an eight-point understanding was prepared following a meeting, including clarification of the circumstances surrounding his playing time. Jesus has disputed aspects of Ronaldo’s account.
Despite the public disagreement, Jesus has continued to leave the door open for Ronaldo’s return to the Portugal squad. Following Portugal’s victory over Norway, the coach said Ronaldo could still be selected if he wished to return, stressing that the decision ultimately rests with the player.
The controversy comes at a significant stage in Ronaldo’s international career, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner having previously indicated that his playing future is approaching its final phase. The disagreement has therefore raised broader questions about the management of senior players, authority within national teams and Ronaldo’s remaining role with Portugal.
For now, Jesus’ decision not to respond directly to the contents of Ronaldo’s statement leaves the dispute unresolved, while attention remains focused on whether the two figures can reach an understanding over the captain’s future with the national team.
