Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has declared President Bola Ahmed Tinubu the North-West’s undisputed choice, amid growing political calculations ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
The declaration, reportedly made at a political rally in Kaduna, places the spotlight on the North-West, a region with considerable electoral influence and a history of shaping the outcome of presidential contests.
The region comprises seven states: Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto and Zamfara. Its large voting population makes it a crucial battleground for candidates seeking to secure the presidency in 2027.
Tinubu, who was elected president in 2023 under the All Progressives Congress (APC), is expected to face intense competition as political parties and influential figures position themselves ahead of the next election.
Kwankwaso remains a prominent political figure in northern Nigeria, particularly in Kano State, where his political movement, the Kwankwasiyya Movement, has maintained a significant following. His political position and public statements therefore attract attention in discussions about the region’s electoral direction.
However, a declaration by a political leader does not necessarily establish the collective position of voters across the North-West. The region’s eventual voting pattern will depend on several factors, including party alliances, candidates, campaign strategies, economic conditions and public assessments of the government’s performance.
As preparations for the 2027 election gather momentum, statements from influential northern politicians are likely to shape political debate over Tinubu’s prospects and the competition for support across the region.
