“Kano Court Jails Man Seven Years for Advertising Cannabis on Social Media as NDLEA Intensifies Online Drug Crackdown”

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has sentenced a 28 year old man, Ashiru Idris, to seven years in prison for publicly advertising cannabis sativa for sale on social media.

The conviction was secured by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, following the circulation of a video allegedly showing Idris promoting cannabis for sale online. He was arrested on April 22, 2026, after NDLEA operatives acted on the directive of the Kano State Commander, CN DY Lawal.

Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court 1, Kano, delivered the judgment on July 14, 2026, sentencing Idris to seven years’ imprisonment without the option of a fine. The sentence is to run from the date of judgment.

The NDLEA described the conviction as a significant warning to individuals who use social media and other digital platforms to promote or facilitate the sale of illicit drugs. The agency said it would continue to act on credible intelligence and pursue those involved in the illegal drug trade.

The development comes amid intensified efforts by Nigerian authorities to curb drug trafficking and the growing use of digital platforms to promote illicit substances. The NDLEA has urged families, community leaders, social media platforms and members of the public to remain vigilant and support efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking.

The case underscores the increasing focus of law enforcement agencies on online activities linked to the illicit drug market, as digital platforms provide offenders with new avenues to advertise and reach potential buyers.
