Kenneth Okonkwo Challenges Tinubu’s Defence of INEC, Renews Debate Over Nigeria’s Electoral Credibility.

Fresh concerns over the credibility and independence of Nigeria’s electoral system have resurfaced after former presidential campaign spokesperson and actor turned politician Kenneth Okonkwo criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s defence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), insisting that unresolved issues surrounding the 2023 general elections continue to undermine public confidence.

Okonkwo argued that INEC has yet to adequately address allegations and controversies that emerged during the 2023 presidential election, maintaining that the electoral body has failed to convince many Nigerians of its impartiality. According to him, defending the commission without confronting lingering concerns risks weakening trust in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

His remarks came in response to President Tinubu’s recent comments supporting INEC and urging Nigerians to respect democratic institutions. The President has consistently maintained that Nigeria’s electoral process remains constitutional and that institutions responsible for conducting elections should be allowed to perform their duties without undue political pressure.

However, Okonkwo contended that genuine electoral reforms require transparency, accountability and institutional independence. He argued that confidence in future elections depends on addressing perceived shortcomings rather than dismissing public concerns raised after the last general election.

The 2023 presidential election remains one of Nigeria’s most contested electoral exercises in recent history. Several opposition parties challenged the outcome in court, alleging irregularities in the conduct of the polls and the transmission of election results. While the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal and subsequently the Supreme Court upheld President Tinubu’s victory, debates over electoral reforms and the operational performance of INEC have continued within political and civil society circles.

Political analysts note that disagreements over the commission’s performance reflect broader calls for improvements in election management, greater transparency in result collation, and stronger safeguards to reinforce public confidence ahead of future elections.

As Nigeria prepares for subsequent electoral cycles, discussions surrounding INEC’s independence, technological deployment, legal reforms and institutional accountability are expected to remain central to the country’s democratic discourse.
