BENIN CITY – The Edo State Government has arrested an alleged kingpin of a kidnapping syndicate linked to multiple abduction cases in Uromi and surrounding communities, as authorities intensify efforts to combat kidnapping, cultism, and other violent crimes across the state.
The suspect, identified as Christian Okoduwa, is currently in police custody in Benin City. His residence on Thursday Street, off Amedokhian Road in Uromi, was demolished by government authorities following investigations and intelligence reports linking the property to criminal activities.
Speaking during the demolition exercise, Secretary of the Edo State Security Squad, Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists, Barrister John Izegaegbe, alleged that investigations connected Okoduwa to a network of kidnapping operations in the area.
According to Izegaegbe, the suspect allegedly coordinated criminal activities by bringing in individuals from neighbouring states and communities to carry out kidnappings in Uromi and its environs.
“This building behind me belongs to Christian Okoduwa, who has been linked to a chain of kidnapping activities. Investigations revealed that he allegedly brought criminal elements into Uromi from neighbouring states and communities to engage in kidnapping operations,” he said.
He further alleged that several arrests made in connection with kidnapping cases in Uromi had been traced to the suspect and his syndicate.
“All arrests made in Uromi and its environs have been linked directly to him and his group. Investigation has revealed that he is the mastermind behind some of the most serious kidnapping incidents recorded in the area, and the law has finally caught up with him,” Izegaegbe stated.
The security official explained that the demolition of the building was carried out in line with the state government’s policy against the use of properties for criminal activities.
“This demolition is the result of kidnapping-related activities. Any building used for such criminal acts must be brought down. Based on verified intelligence and investigations, we received a directive to demolish the structure, and that is what has been done in accordance with the law,” he said.
Izegaegbe added that statements obtained from several arrested suspects allegedly implicated Okoduwa in kidnapping operations across the locality.
“Most of the suspects arrested have mentioned his name and linked their activities to him. This informed the decision to demolish the building. The government remains determined to rid Edo State of criminal elements, and anyone involved in kidnapping or related crimes will be arrested and prosecuted,” he said.
The arrest and demolition come amid the Edo State Government’s renewed crackdown on kidnapping and cult-related crimes, with authorities vowing to sustain ongoing operations aimed at improving security across the state.
