Lagos Begins 35 Day Lekki Epe Expressway Repairs, Announces Traffic Diversions for Motorists.

The Lagos State Government has commenced a 35 day rehabilitation programme on damaged sections of the Eti Osa/Lekki Epe Expressway, with motorists expected to experience temporary traffic disruptions along parts of the busy corridor.

The rehabilitation, scheduled to begin on Thursday, October 15, 2026, covers the stretch from Bonny Camp to Admiralty Way Junction, as well as sections around Victoria Garden City (VGC) in Eti Osa Local Government Area.

According to News reports, the intervention is aimed at improving road conditions, strengthening safety for motorists and addressing concerns over the deteriorating state of the expressway.

Olufemi Daramola, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu on Infrastructure, disclosed details of the project during a stakeholders’ engagement organised by the state Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.

Daramola said traffic diversion arrangements would be introduced during the construction period to minimize congestion and protect road users. He also appealed to residents, business owners and commuters to cooperate with the government and construction teams throughout the exercise.

Traffic Concerns Along the Lekki Epe Corridor

The Lekki Epe Expressway is a major transport route connecting residential communities, commercial centres and industrial developments across the Lekki Peninsula, Ajah and Epe.

The corridor also serves businesses and major investments in the Lekki axis, making its condition critical to daily commuting, commercial activities and the movement of goods.

However, recurring congestion and road deterioration have continued to create challenges for motorists, particularly during periods of construction and heavy rainfall.

The latest rehabilitation is expected to address damaged sections while improving movement along the strategic highway. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of the intervention will depend partly on how well construction activities and traffic diversions are managed.

Motorists are advised to allow additional travel time, follow official traffic instructions and remain alert to temporary changes in road access while the work continues.

Residents Raise Concerns Over Drainage and Traffic Management

During the stakeholders’ engagement, residents and community representatives highlighted issues requiring attention alongside the road repairs.

Sir Akin Fadoju, chairman of the Victoria Island and Lekki Residents Association, reportedly raised concerns about inadequate drainage along the corridor, noting that poor drainage contributes to flooding during rainfall.

The concerns underscore the need for road rehabilitation to be supported by effective drainage infrastructure and appropriate maintenance.

Residents and businesses also have an interest in ensuring that traffic diversions are clearly communicated and properly managed to prevent avoidable gridlock during the construction period.

The government has urged members of the public to cooperate with the relevant authorities to facilitate the timely completion of the project.

Previous Rehabilitation Efforts Along the Expressway

The latest intervention follows earlier rehabilitation projects on sections of the Eti Osa/Lekki Epe Expressway.

In January 2026, the Lagos State Government resumed work on parts of the corridor between Admiralty Way Junction and Jubilee Bridge in Ajah after construction activities had been suspended in December 2025 following complaints about traffic congestion.

Earlier phases also included rehabilitation along the Chevron Admiralty Way section and traffic management measures around intersections serving communities along the route.

These projects form part of broader efforts to improve road infrastructure across the Lekki Epe axis, where population growth, commercial expansion and industrial investment have increased pressure on the transport network.

The new 35 day programme represents another step towards addressing remaining damaged sections of the expressway.

However, the government will need to ensure that the repairs deliver durable improvements, with adequate drainage, effective traffic management and routine maintenance remaining important considerations.

As work progresses, commuters and businesses will be watching closely to see whether the intervention improves road conditions without causing prolonged disruption to movement across the Lekki corridor.
