Lagos, Nigeria – In a press conference held on Sunday, the Lagos Indigenous Youth Network (LIYN) expressed their opposition to the planned hunger protest scheduled for August 1 to 10, 2024. The youth leaders from the five divisions of Lagos state gathered at the statue of the three Wise Men in Ikeja, the state capital, to voice their concerns.Lagos Indigenous Youths Reject Planned Protest, Citing Political Motives
The LIYN leaders argued that the protest seemed to be driven by political motives rather than a genuine concern for the public interest. They highlighted intelligence reports that suggested the protest was politically motivated and urged caution in engaging in activities that could lead to tension and violence.
“We are not against citizens constructively engaging their leaders when necessary. However, when such engagement turns into a platform for settling political scores, it is time to exercise caution. This is what we are doing today,” said Mobolaji Ogunlende, a leader in LIYN.
The group emphasized that the planned protest did not align with the interests of peace-loving and hardworking Lagosians. They made it clear that they did not support any form of protest and called on all Lagosians, especially parents, to discourage their children from participating.
Ogunlende went on to appeal to those behind the protest to reconsider their actions, stating, “Lagos is working, and we stand with our dear President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He will address all grievances and ensure that all is well in our dear country, Nigeria.”
The LIYN leaders also highlighted the achievements of Lagos state, stating that the government had cleared all pension backlogs, paid above the minimum wage, and provided free healthcare and subsidized education to all residents, regardless of ethnicity.
In conclusion, the Lagos Indigenous Youths urged unity and encouraged the Lagos State Government to remain a pacesetter in the country. They emphasized the need to prioritize the interests of the state and its residents, and to work towards a peaceful and prosperous Lagos.
