At least 44 people have died after an overcrowded ferry capsized on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, in one of the country’s deadliest recent water transport disasters.

Zimbabwean police confirmed the revised death toll on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, after the vessel overturned a day earlier while travelling from the lakeside town of Kariba towards islands and fishing camps.

According to Zimbabwe’s Civil Protection Unit, the ferry had a stated capacity of 90 people, but ticket records indicated that at least 114 adult passengers and five crew members were aboard. The actual number of people on the vessel remains uncertain because some children may not have required tickets. A crew member reportedly told Zimbabwe’s national broadcaster that as many as 153 people were on board when the ferry capsized after encountering large waves.

The accident triggered an immediate search-and-rescue operation involving boats, helicopters and specialized underwater teams. Earlier reports said 77 people had been rescued, while authorities continued efforts to recover bodies and determine the full number of passengers affected.

The circumstances surrounding the disaster have also raised concerns about overcrowding, vessel safety and the condition of the ferry. Local reports cited concerns from residents about whether the ageing vessel was adequately equipped to withstand difficult conditions on the lake. Lake Kariba, which straddles the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, is the world’s largest man made lake by volume and plays an important role in transportation, fishing, tourism and regional energy production. Its vast size and sometimes challenging conditions have contributed to previous fatal boating incidents. The Guardian reported that fatal capsizings have occurred in different parts of the lake in previous years, underscoring longstanding concerns about water transport safety in the region.
