LASEPA Celebrates 30 Years of Environmental Protection, Renews Commitment to a Cleaner and Healthier Lagos.

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has marked three decades of environmental regulation and pollution control, reaffirming its commitment to building a cleaner, safer and healthier environment for residents across Lagos State.

The milestone, celebrated in November 2026, provides an opportunity for the agency to reflect on its contributions to environmental sustainability, assess its achievements and strengthen efforts to address the growing environmental challenges facing Nigeria’s commercial capital.

Established on November 1, 1996, under the LASEPA Edict No. 9 of 1996, the agency is responsible for protecting and improving the environment through pollution monitoring, regulatory enforcement, environmental research and compliance initiatives.

Speaking during activities marking the anniversary, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Environmental Services, Dr Omobolaji Tajudeen Gaji, commended the agency for its contributions to combating environmental pollution, particularly noise and air pollution.

He stressed that environmental protection should not depend solely on government enforcement, urging residents, business owners and industrial operators to embrace environmental regulations through increased awareness and voluntary compliance.

According to him, constructive engagement and public cooperation remain essential to achieving sustainable environmental management across the state.

LASEPA General Manager, Dr Babatunde Ajayi, described the anniversary as a significant milestone in the agency’s history, highlighting improvements in environmental regulations, pollution monitoring and operational capacity over the past 30 years.

He identified noise pollution control, air quality management, industrial pollution monitoring and regulatory enforcement as some of the agency’s major areas of intervention.

Ajayi also highlighted the digitalization of the agency’s operations, explaining that residents can now report environmental violations and track their complaints through an online reporting portal. The initiative is expected to improve public access to environmental services and strengthen the agency’s response to reported violations.

Beyond pollution control, he pointed to LASEPA’s contributions to Nigeria’s carbon market and climate action initiatives, as well as the importance of its government owned environmental laboratory in supporting scientific investigations, environmental monitoring and evidence-based regulatory decisions.

The anniversary also comes amid continuing enforcement efforts against environmental violations. Reports indicate that LASEPA has carried out more than 30,000 enforcement actions relating to noise pollution over its 30-year existence, according to figures disclosed by its General Manager. These interventions have covered businesses, industrial facilities, religious institutions and other establishments.

However, the agency acknowledges that significant challenges remain, particularly as Lagos continues to experience rapid population growth, urbanisation and increasing commercial and industrial activities. These developments place additional pressure on environmental monitoring, pollution management and regulatory enforcement.

The 30th anniversary therefore represents more than an institutional celebration. It also presents an opportunity to strengthen environmental accountability, improve public awareness and ensure that economic development does not come at the expense of public health and ecological sustainability.

For Lagos, a state facing persistent environmental pressures associated with urban expansion and intensive human activities, effective environmental governance remains critical to protecting residents and preserving natural resources.

As LASEPA enters its next chapter, its ability to translate regulatory policies, technological improvements and enforcement measures into measurable environmental improvements will remain central to its relevance.

Ultimately, achieving a cleaner Lagos requires more than government intervention. It demands sustained cooperation among public institutions, businesses, communities and individual residents.

Obaland Magazine will continue to monitor environmental policies and sustainability initiatives shaping Lagos State and the wider African region.
