  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

LILONGWE/CAIRO — Malawi delivered one of the biggest surprises of the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), defeating continental heavyweights Egypt 3-1 in a commanding Group C encounter to move provisionally to the top of the standings and strengthen their bid for a place in the knockout stage.

The Scorchers produced an energetic, disciplined, and clinical performance that underlined the rapid growth of women’s football in Southern Africa. Facing an Egyptian side widely regarded as one of the tournament’s experienced competitors, Malawi displayed resilience, tactical organization, and attacking efficiency to secure all three points in a result that could significantly reshape the dynamics of Group C.

The victory was celebrated by Malawian supporters as another milestone in the country’s growing football story, while Egypt will now face mounting pressure in their remaining fixtures as they seek to revive their qualification hopes.

Malawi Rise to the Occasion

From the opening whistle, Malawi approached the match with confidence and determination. Rather than allowing Egypt to dominate possession and dictate the pace, the Scorchers pressed aggressively, disrupted the North Africans’ rhythm, and attacked with pace whenever opportunities emerged.

Their proactive approach paid dividends as Malawi capitalized on defensive lapses to establish control of the contest. The team’s midfield worked tirelessly to win second balls, while quick transitions exposed gaps in Egypt’s defensive structure.

Malawi’s attacking players converted their chances with composure, demonstrating the confidence that has become increasingly associated with the team’s recent performances on the continental stage.

Although Egypt managed to score and briefly threaten a comeback, Malawi remained composed, responding with disciplined defending and further attacking intent that ultimately secured a convincing 3-1 victory.

Tactical Discipline Defines Malawi’s Performance

One of the most impressive aspects of Malawi’s victory was the team’s tactical execution.

The Scorchers maintained a compact defensive shape when out of possession while transitioning quickly into attack. Their ability to exploit space behind Egypt’s defensive line repeatedly created dangerous scoring opportunities.

Malawi also displayed impressive physical intensity throughout the match, refusing to allow Egypt’s experienced players sufficient time on the ball.

Their pressing game forced turnovers in dangerous areas, while accurate passing and intelligent movement enabled them to create sustained pressure in the final third.

Defensively, the Southern African side remained organized even after conceding, refusing to panic or retreat excessively. Instead, they continued playing positively and were rewarded with additional goals that effectively ended Egypt’s hopes of mounting a comeback.

Egypt Left Searching for Answers

For Egypt, the defeat represents a significant setback in their WAFCON campaign.

Despite entering the fixture with ambitions of competing strongly in Group C, defensive mistakes and inconsistent finishing proved costly against a confident Malawian side.

Egypt struggled to contain Malawi’s pace on the counterattack and often found themselves under pressure when attempting to build attacks from the back.

Although moments of individual quality created opportunities, the Pharaohs lacked consistency in the attacking third and were unable to convert possession into meaningful chances.

The coaching staff will now need to regroup quickly ahead of the team’s remaining group-stage matches, where maximum points may become essential to keep qualification hopes alive.

Group C Race Becomes Increasingly Competitive

The result has dramatically altered the complexion of Group C.

Malawi’s victory places the Scorchers in a strong position as they provisionally occupy the top spot, although the final standings will depend on the outcome of other group fixtures.

The result also increases pressure on rival teams chasing qualification, ensuring that every remaining match in the group will carry significant importance.

With only a limited number of knockout places available, goal difference, head-to-head records, and defensive performances could ultimately determine which nations progress beyond the group stage.

For Malawi, however, the immediate focus will be maintaining consistency and avoiding complacency as tougher challenges may still lie ahead.

Southern Africa’s Continued Rise in Women’s Football

Malawi’s impressive victory also reflects the broader rise of women’s football across Southern Africa.

Over the past decade, several nations from the region have invested significantly in developing female football through youth academies, domestic competitions, coaching education, and increased support from national football associations.

Countries such as South Africa have already demonstrated the region’s growing strength by achieving continental success, while Zambia has emerged as one of Africa’s most exciting women’s football nations through consistent performances at major international tournaments.

Malawi’s latest achievement adds further evidence that Southern African teams are becoming increasingly competitive against traditional continental powers.

The result may also encourage greater investment in women’s football infrastructure, talent identification, and grassroots development within Malawi itself.

Importance Beyond Three Points

Beyond the immediate significance of earning three valuable points, the victory carries symbolic importance for Malawian football.

Success at major continental tournaments often inspires increased participation among young girls while attracting greater government and private-sector support for women’s sports.

Positive international performances can also improve sponsorship opportunities, media visibility, and investment in domestic leagues.

For players representing Malawi, defeating a respected football nation such as Egypt demonstrates that determination, tactical discipline, and effective preparation can overcome differences in historical pedigree.

Such victories contribute to changing perceptions about competitive balance within African women’s football.

Growing Quality of WAFCON

The latest result further highlights the increasing competitiveness of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Recent editions of the tournament have produced more closely contested matches, with emerging football nations increasingly challenging traditional continental giants.

Improved coaching standards, enhanced youth development programmes, and greater international exposure have collectively raised the overall quality of African women’s football.

As more African players compete professionally in Europe, North America, and other international leagues, national teams continue benefiting from improved technical standards and tactical awareness.

This growing competitiveness has made WAFCON one of the continent’s most entertaining football competitions, with surprises becoming increasingly common.

Fans Celebrate Historic Result

Supporters across Malawi celebrated the memorable victory, praising the Scorchers for their courage, teamwork, and determination.

Football analysts also described the performance as one of Malawi’s strongest displays in recent continental competition, noting the team’s tactical maturity and clinical finishing.

Across social media platforms, fans applauded the players for representing the country with pride while expressing optimism that the team can continue its impressive run in the tournament.

For Egypt, meanwhile, supporters urged the team to respond positively and focus on the remaining fixtures rather than dwelling on the disappointing defeat.

Looking Ahead

As Group C enters its decisive phase, Malawi will seek to build upon this confidence-boosting victory while remaining focused on qualification for the knockout rounds.

The Scorchers know that maintaining concentration, tactical discipline, and attacking efficiency will be essential if they hope to sustain their impressive campaign.

Egypt, on the other hand, must quickly recover from the setback and address the defensive vulnerabilities exposed during the match.

With qualification still within reach depending on other results, the North African side cannot afford further mistakes.

Regardless of how the group eventually concludes, Malawi’s 3-1 victory over Egypt will stand as one of the defining moments of this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, illustrating the growing competitiveness of African women’s football and reaffirming that no team can be underestimated on the continental stage.
