The battle against fake drug cartels is a dangerous and ongoing struggle for the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Nigeria. In a recent series of interviews, senior NAFDAC officials shared harrowing tales of their encounters with illicit drug dealers and the risks they face in their line of work.Merchants of death Inside NAFDAC’s battle against fake drug cartels
The Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has issued a strong call for action against those involved in counterfeit drugs, labeling them as “merchants of death.” She highlighted the significant seizure of fake and expired medical products, including antiretroviral drugs and condoms, valued at over N1 trillion in recent operations by the agency.
Despite these successes, the personal safety of NAFDAC officials remains a critical concern. Adeyeye disclosed the need for round-the-clock police protection due to threats on her life.
The Secretary of the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria, NAFDAC branch, also expressed worry about the safety of field officers who often face hazardous situations during enforcement raids.
NAFDAC officials shared chilling accounts of their encounters with fake drug merchants, including near-fatal attacks during surveillance operations and enforcement raids. They recalled instances of being trailed, attacked, and even killed in the line of duty. These accounts shed light on the dangerous and unpredictable nature of combating the scourge of fake drugs in Nigeria.
The lack of adequate resources, poor funding, and understaffing further compound the challenges faced by NAFDAC in its fight against counterfeit drugs. Insufficient logistics hinder effective enforcement efforts, while the agency’s limited workforce strains its capacity to cover vast territories and engage in targeted operations.
The need for improved security measures, increased government support, and better compensation for NAFDAC staff has been underscored by the escalating dangers they face. The risks involved in tackling fake drug cartels extend beyond physical threats to include long-term health hazards posed by handling hazardous chemicals and navigating hazardous work environments.
As NAFDAC continues its relentless pursuit of counterfeit drug dealers, the agency’s efforts to safeguard public health in Nigeria remain paramount.
The tales of bravery and resilience shared by NAFDAC officials serve as a sobering reminder of the sacrifices made to protect the lives and well-being of millions of Nigerians. The fight against fake drug cartels is not just a battle for NAFDAC but a collective endeavor to secure a safer future for all.
