Meta Don Set New Social Media Rules for Teenagers After $17.1bn Palava.

Meta, di company wey own Facebook and Instagram, don agree to pay up to $17.1 billion to settle one big case for United States over allegations say e design e social media platforms in ways wey fit encourage young people to overuse dem. The agreement come after dozens of U.S. states accuse Meta say some of di features for Facebook and Instagram fit harm children and teenagers. Meta no admit say e do anything wrong as part of di settlement.

Veteran actor Olu Jacobs don kpai for 84 years old.

Under di new agreement, teenagers under 18 go get two hour daily limit for Facebook and Instagram by default. Di two apps go also block teen access between midnight and 6 a.m., while notifications fit stop during school hours and night time. Parents wey get verified account go fit change some of di restrictions.

Meta also agree to bring stronger age checking systems and extra protection for young users. Some features, including like and reaction counts, go face restrictions for teenagers, while di company also plan stronger controls against harmful content. Di settlement still need court approval before all di changes fully take effect.

Some child safety advocates don welcome di move, but some critics say simply limiting di time teenagers spend online no go solve all di problems connected to addictive social media design and harmful content. Meta, meanwhile, say e already dey work to make Facebook and Instagram safer for young people.
