Multiple Fatalities Confirmed After Police Vehicle and Car Crash on A66 Near Middlesbrough.
Several people have died following a serious collision involving a police vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat on the A66 in South Bank, near Middlesbrough in northeast England.
Cleveland Police said the crash occurred at approximately 3:39 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2026, resulting in multiple fatalities. Authorities said they were working to identify those who died and notify their families.
The incident triggered a major emergency response, with the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) deploying 14 ambulance units, alongside specialist medical personnel, a hazardous area response team and a doctor from the Great North Air Ambulance Service. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, several people were pronounced dead at the scene.
Early reports indicate that the collision involved three vehicles, although Cleveland Police initially highlighted the police vehicle and Volkswagen Passat in its public statement. The precise circumstances leading to the crash, including whether the police vehicle was responding to an incident or travelling under emergency conditions, had not been established publicly at the time of reporting. Authorities have urged the public not to speculate while investigations continue.
The A66 was closed in both directions between Normanby Road and Church Lane as emergency crews remained at the scene. Police advised motorists to use alternative routes and warned that the road would remain closed for some time.
The tragedy comes as investigators begin the process of establishing exactly how the collision occurred and determining the identities of those involved. Cleveland Police has appealed for restraint and respect for the families of the victims as the investigation progresses.
