Nigeria at 66: Jonathan Says 2027 Election Will Put Democratic Maturity to the Test.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said Nigeria’s 2027 general election will provide an important test of the country’s democratic maturity, urging citizens to protect peace, national unity and justice as political activities intensify.
Jonathan made the remarks in his Independence Day message on Thursday, October 1, as Nigeria commemorated 66 years of independence. He called on Nigerians to remain patriotic and responsible as the country approaches another electoral season.
“In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity,” Jonathan said, urging citizens to prioritize actions that safeguard peace, unity and justice.
The former president also reflected on Nigeria’s journey since independence in 1960, acknowledging the challenges the country has experienced while highlighting what he described as the resilience of its people. He urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and committed to working together toward national development.
Jonathan further called on leaders at all levels to demonstrate greater responsibility and patriotism, particularly in addressing Nigeria’s social and economic challenges. He identified good governance, accountability, personal sacrifice and adherence to the rule of law as important elements in building a peaceful, secure and equitable society.
His message comes as political parties, aspirants and political groups continue preparations for the 2027 general elections. The approaching election cycle is already generating significant political activity and debate, including developments within opposition parties and discussions over possible presidential contenders.
Jonathan also appealed to young Nigerians to remain hopeful and courageous, saying the country possesses significant opportunities if its diversity and human and natural resources are effectively harnessed for sustainable development.
As Nigeria marks its 66th year of independence, the former president’s message places emphasis on the responsibilities of both citizens and political leaders in preserving democratic institutions and maintaining national cohesion ahead of the next electoral cycle.
