Nigeria Congratulates Bangladesh’s New President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as Country Marks Major Political Transition.

Nigeria’s Federal Government has congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir following his election as the 23rd President of Bangladesh, as the South Asian nation moves into a new phase of its political transition.

Alamgir, a veteran leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was elected by Parliament on Thursday, August 20, 2026, defeating retired Colonel Oli Ahmed, the candidate backed by an 11 party opposition alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. Alamgir secured 255 votes, while Ahmed received 88 votes. The Election Commission subsequently issued a gazette formally declaring Alamgir president.

The election is significant because it was the first contested presidential election in Bangladesh in 35 years. Although the presidency is largely ceremonial, the office remains constitutionally important, including its role as commander in chief of the armed forces. Alamgir is expected to assume office on Friday, August 21.

The 78 year old politician has spent decades in Bangladeshi politics. He served as BNP secretary general from 2016 until his nomination for the presidency, resigning from the party position earlier this month to contest the election. His political career has also included teaching and government service, while he emerged as one of the most prominent opposition figures during Sheikh Hasina’s long tenure as prime minister.

Alamgir’s election comes after a major political realignment in Bangladesh. The BNP returned to power following the February 2026 general election, with Tarique Rahman becoming prime minister. The development followed the upheaval that led to Sheikh Hasina’s departure from office in 2024 and a subsequent interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.

International reactions to Alamgir’s election have also begun to emerge. China, the United Kingdom, France and Switzerland have publicly congratulated the new president and expressed interest in strengthening relations with Bangladesh. Former interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus also congratulated Alamgir, describing his long political career and experience as important qualities for the country’s highest constitutional office.

For Nigeria, the reported congratulatory message reflects the broader diplomatic importance of Bangladesh’s political transition. Both countries maintain relations within the wider framework of South South cooperation, while Bangladesh’s emergence as a major South Asian economic and political actor makes developments in Dhaka relevant to Africa’s engagement with Asia.

The new presidency will now be closely watched as Bangladesh seeks to consolidate its democratic institutions following years of political tension. While Alamgir’s constitutional role is primarily ceremonial, his decades of political experience and close association with the ruling BNP could make his leadership significant in a country still navigating the institutional and political consequences of its recent upheavals.
