Nigeria is focusing on empowering women and youth in the fisheries sector to enhance nutritional security and economic growth. The Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy is implementing reforms to unlock the sector’s potential, prioritizing inclusive value chains and economic resilience.
Permanent Secretary Fatima Sugra T. Mahmood emphasized the need for coordinated action among governments, development partners, and stakeholders to achieve sustainable growth. The Women & Youth Economic Empowerment in Fisheries programme aims to create 242,000 decent jobs and address economic inequalities.
Key challenges include limited access to finance, infrastructure, and technology. The government is providing support, such as improved smoking kilns and fingerlings, to enhance productivity and incomes.
The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents opportunities for cross-border trade, market expansion, and regional food security. Stakeholders are working to simplify trade procedures and improve access to finance.
