Nigeria has strengthened its standing in international basketball, with six Nigerian players listed on opening-night rosters for the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) 2026/27 season, according to the league’s official announcement.
The figure places Nigeria among the leading countries represented in the NBA, alongside Serbia, which also has six players. France leads the international contingent with 17 players, followed by Canada with 16, Australia with nine and Germany with seven.
The NBA announced on October 20, 2026, that 125 international players from 43 countries across six continents feature on opening-night rosters for the new season. The league also reported a record of more than 60 players who were either born in Africa or have at least one parent born on the continent.
Nigeria’s six players are Ugonna Onyenso of the Detroit Pistons, Charles Bassey of the Golden State Warriors, Adem Bona of the Philadelphia 76ers, Precious Achiuwa of the Sacramento Kings, Josh Okogie of the Utah Jazz and Felix Okpara of the Washington Wizards.
Their presence across six NBA teams highlights Nigeria’s continued contribution to the league’s international talent pool. The players also provide a visible connection between Nigerian basketball and one of the world’s most prominent professional basketball competitions.
The achievement comes amid the NBA’s growing international reach. According to the league, this is the sixth consecutive season in which opening-night rosters have featured at least 120 international players and the 13th straight season with at least 100.
All 30 NBA teams have at least one international player on their opening-night rosters, underlining the global scope of the competition.
For Nigerian basketball, the six-player representation offers an important opportunity to sustain interest in the sport, encourage emerging talents and strengthen the country’s profile on the international stage. However, the presence of Nigerian players in the NBA should be distinguished from the number of athletes developed entirely within Nigeria, as professional pathways often involve training and competition in the United States and other countries.
Nigeria’s representation in the 2026/27 season therefore stands as a notable milestone, while the broader challenge remains to translate international visibility into stronger domestic development, coaching, infrastructure and opportunities for young basketball players.
Nigeria has six players on NBA opening-night rosters for the 2026/27 season, joining a record international contingent representing 43 countries.
