Nigerian Army Expands Security Presence in Zamfara With New Infantry Battalions.
The Nigerian Army has operationalized additional infantry formations in Zamfara State as part of efforts to strengthen its presence and improve responses to security threats across the state.
According to a military operational report made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on September 29, 2026, the Army operationalized the 12 Infantry Battalion in Bakura Local Government Area and 28 Infantry Battalion in Anka Local Government Area on September 28.
The development is part of a broader effort by the Nigerian Army to expand its operational footprint, strengthen command and control, and improve its ability to respond to terrorism, kidnapping and other security challenges in the North West.
The Acting Commander of 1 Brigade, who represented the General Officer Commanding 8 Division, Nigerian Army, charged personnel of the newly operationalized battalions to remain committed to combating insecurity within their respective areas of responsibility.
The move comes amid continuing security challenges in Zamfara, where communities have faced attacks, kidnappings and other forms of armed violence. Recent military operations in the state have included efforts to rescue abducted residents and disrupt terrorist activities.
Vanguard, citing the NAN operational report, also reported that troops in Zamfara recently responded to terrorist activity around Fegen Baza and the Setraco Company area in Tsafe Local Government Area, where 41 civilians were reportedly abandoned by the attackers after troops engaged them.
The latest deployment also comes against the backdrop of a wider restructuring of the Nigerian Army. In July, President Bola Tinubu approved an expansion of the Army’s structure from eight to 12 divisions, with the 8 Division headquartered in Sokoto retaining responsibility for Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states.
The Army’s increased presence in Zamfara is therefore expected to support ongoing operations under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, which covers security operations across parts of the North West.
However, the available NAN based reports reviewed by Obaland Magazine specifically confirm the operationalization of two battalions 12 Infantry Battalion in Bakura and 28 Infantry Battalion in Anka. They do not independently confirm the reported reference to a third battalion in Kaura Namoda. Obaland Magazine therefore does not present that additional detail as established fact without further official confirmation.
The development reflects the Federal Government and military’s broader strategy of increasing troop presence and operational capacity in areas affected by persistent insecurity, while the effectiveness of the new formations will ultimately depend on sustained deployment, intelligence gathering, logistics and coordination with other security agencies and local communities.
