  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

The Nigerian Army has rescued 14 people abducted by suspected kidnappers along the Lagos-Benin Expressway in Edo State, following an intelligence-led operation that forced the abductors to abandon part of their captives before fleeing into a nearby forest.

The operation, conducted by troops of the Nigerian Army’s 4 Brigade under Operation WABAIZIGAN, took place after a kidnapping incident reported on Thursday night, July 30, 2026, in the Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State. The rescue effort continued into Friday, July 31, when soldiers carried out a follow-up clearance operation in the forest and recovered the remaining victims.

According to the Army, the operation began at about 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, when troops on routine patrol received credible intelligence about the abduction. Rather than allowing the suspects to establish a secure route into the forest, the soldiers immediately mounted a pursuit along the kidnappers’ escape path.

The military said the sustained pressure applied by the troops disrupted the kidnappers’ movement and compelled them to abandon 11 of the abducted victims before escaping into the surrounding forest. The remaining three victims were subsequently located and rescued when the troops intensified their clearance operations in the forest on Friday.

The Army’s account means all 14 victims taken during the incident were ultimately recovered alive. The development represents another operational success for security forces working to contain kidnapping activity along major transport corridors in southern Nigeria, particularly areas where road networks provide access to forested locations that can be exploited by criminal groups.

How the Rescue Unfolded

The rescue operation illustrates the importance of rapid military response after intelligence is received about an ongoing abduction.

The Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 4 Brigade, Captain Kennedy Anyanwu, said the soldiers were alerted while conducting routine patrols. On receiving the information, the troops immediately mobilised and pursued the kidnappers along their escape route.

Rather than waiting for the abductors to disappear completely into the forest, the troops applied what the Army described as sustained pressure. That response reportedly disrupted the kidnappers’ ability to keep all the captives together, resulting in the abandonment of 11 victims. The suspects then fled further into the forest, leaving security personnel to conduct a more extensive search for the three people who remained in captivity.

On Friday, the troops launched a follow-up clearance operation within the surrounding forest. The Army said that phase of the operation led to the rescue of the remaining three victims and brought the total number of people rescued to 14.

The sequence is significant because forested terrain is often difficult to search rapidly, particularly after criminal groups disperse or move captives through multiple locations. In this case, however, the military said continued pressure and follow-up operations enabled the troops to locate everyone who had been abducted.

Victims Declared Stable After Medical Examination

Following the rescue, the 14 victims were not immediately returned to their families without assessment.

The Army said the rescued individuals underwent preliminary debriefing and medical examinations, after which they were confirmed to be in stable condition. They were then reunited with their families and allowed to continue their journeys.

The post-rescue assessment is important in cases of kidnapping, where victims may experience physical injuries, dehydration, psychological distress or other difficulties during captivity. While the Army did not disclose details about the individual condition of the victims or the length of time they spent in captivity, its statement indicated that all 14 were stable at the conclusion of the initial checks.

The authorities have also not publicly released the identities of the rescued individuals. Maintaining the privacy of victims in sensitive kidnapping cases can be important, particularly while investigations remain active and security agencies continue attempts to identify and apprehend suspected perpetrators.

Kidnappers Still at Large

Despite the successful rescue, the operation remains unfinished from a law-enforcement perspective.

The Army said the suspected kidnappers escaped into the forest and that security personnel have intensified efforts to locate and arrest them.

This distinction is crucial. A successful rescue operation protects the immediate victims, but it does not by itself dismantle the criminal network responsible for the abduction. Identifying the perpetrators, tracing their movements, establishing their links with other criminal operations and bringing them before the courts remain important components of the wider security response.

The Army did not announce any arrest or casualty among the suspected kidnappers in connection with this particular incident as of its latest statement. It therefore remains premature to attribute specific identities, affiliations or wider criminal activities to those responsible without further evidence from investigators.

Obaland Magazine understands that the focus of the ongoing operation is now shifting from rescue to pursuit and intelligence gathering as security personnel seek to prevent the suspects from regrouping or using the surrounding forest as a sanctuary.

Army Reassures Motorists and Residents

The successful operation comes as the Nigerian Army seeks to reassure residents and road users that security forces remain committed to protecting lives and property along the strategic corridor.

The Commander of the 4 Brigade, Brigadier-General Ahmed Balogun, commended the troops for what he described as their professionalism, resilience and courage during the operation.

Balogun also reassured residents of Edo State and motorists travelling along the Lagos-Benin Expressway that the brigade would continue its operations against criminal elements and work to deny kidnappers safe havens.

His message carries particular importance for road users because the Lagos-Benin route is a major transportation artery linking commercial centres in southwestern and southern Nigeria. Any persistent threat to travellers on such a corridor can have consequences beyond individual victims, affecting public confidence, movement of people and goods, and the broader sense of security experienced by commuters and businesses.

Intelligence and Public Cooperation Remain Central

The Army’s account also places considerable emphasis on the role of intelligence.

Captain Anyanwu urged members of the public to continue providing security agencies with timely and credible information that can support operations against criminal groups.

In practical terms, the incident demonstrates why early reporting can matter in kidnapping cases. In this operation, information received while troops were on patrol enabled the security personnel to begin their response at a relatively early stage of the incident. The immediate pursuit, according to the Army, helped prevent the kidnappers from moving all the victims deeper into the forest.

However, public cooperation must be matched by effective handling of information by security agencies. Residents who report suspicious activities need confidence that their information will be treated professionally and that they will not be exposed unnecessarily to reprisals from criminal groups.

The wider challenge, therefore, extends beyond patrols and tactical operations. Sustainable security on highways such as the Lagos-Benin Expressway requires coordination among the military, police, local authorities, community structures and other relevant agencies, alongside improved intelligence gathering and rapid response mechanisms.

What the Operation Means for Edo’s Security Landscape

The rescue is a positive development for Edo State at a time when security agencies continue to confront the challenge of kidnapping and other violent crimes.

For the Nigerian Army, the operation offers evidence of the value of combining patrol activity, intelligence and follow-up clearance missions. The fact that the first pursuit recovered 11 victims and a subsequent forest operation located the remaining three suggests that maintaining pressure after an initial rescue can be critical to ensuring that no captive is left behind.

At the same time, the incident should not be interpreted as proof that the broader kidnapping threat has been eliminated. The escape of the suspected kidnappers means the perpetrators remain a security concern, while the circumstances that enabled the abduction will require further investigation.

For communities along the corridor, the most immediate significance lies in the safe return of the victims. For security agencies, however, the next objective is clear: locate those responsible, determine how the abduction was organised, identify possible collaborators and prevent a repeat incident.

Security Success Must Be Followed by Accountability

The rescue of the 14 victims is undoubtedly a welcome outcome, but a durable security response requires more than freeing captives.

The suspected kidnappers must ultimately be identified and brought before the appropriate authorities where evidence supports prosecution. Investigators will also need to establish whether the group operates independently or is connected to a wider kidnapping network.

Equally important is the need for continued monitoring of the forest corridors surrounding vulnerable sections of the highway. Criminal groups can quickly alter routes, move between communities and exploit gaps in surveillance. The ability of security forces to sustain pressure after a rescue therefore remains central to preventing criminal elements from returning to the same environment.

For motorists, the development is both reassuring and cautionary. It demonstrates that rapid military intervention can save lives, but it also underlines the continued need for vigilance while travelling through areas regarded as vulnerable to kidnapping.

The Nigerian Army’s latest operation has ended with all 14 abducted persons safely recovered, but the wider security story is not yet concluded. The suspects remain at large, and efforts to apprehend them are ongoing.

For Edo State, the priority now is to translate the immediate success of the rescue into sustained pressure against kidnapping networks operating around highways and forested areas. For the security agencies, the task is to ensure that intelligence, rapid response and follow-up operations continue to work together.

The safe recovery of all 14 victims is a significant outcome. The ultimate measure of success, however, will be whether those behind the abduction are arrested, prosecuted and prevented from repeating the crime
