Reported by Musa Antiketu,| Journalist at Obaland magazine.

Nigerian music scholars and practitioners have honoured the General Overseer of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), Dr Daniel Kolawole Olukoya, with a Life Grand Patron award, recognising his contributions to music scholarship, education, composition and the development of musical institutions in Nigeria.

The recognition places renewed attention on the intersection of faith, music education and academic scholarship in Nigeria, particularly Olukoya’s longstanding involvement in supporting musicians, music departments and institutions.

Olukoya is widely known as the founder of MFM and Mountain Top University, but his involvement in music extends beyond his religious ministry. He has been associated with musical composition and the promotion of music education, while institutions and music scholars have previously acknowledged his financial and institutional support for music programmes.

In 2018, Vanguard reported that five Nigerian universities organised an intercollegiate choral festival in honour of Olukoya, with participating institutions performing some of his choral compositions. The report quoted Dr Albert Oikelome, then programme director of the event, as saying Olukoya had contributed significantly to the development of music in African institutions and supported music departments and the Association of Nigerian Musicologists.

Olukoya’s connection with academic music has also been reflected in the development of music education at Mountain Top University. A ThisNigeria report on the university’s celebration of veteran composer and organist Rev. John Aina noted the prominent position of the university’s music programme and described music as an important component of the institution established by Olukoya.

His influence has also been acknowledged by academics working directly in the field. In a 2025 interview with Punch, University of Lagos Professor of Musicology and Performance Studies Albert Oikelome described Olukoya as his mentor and spoke about the impact of the cleric’s support on music education. Oikelome said Olukoya had financed a substantial proportion of musical instruments used by the university’s music department.

The recognition comes against the backdrop of persistent concerns about funding and infrastructure for music education in Nigerian tertiary institutions. Music departments across the country require instruments, rehearsal facilities, research funding and opportunities for students and scholars to participate in local and international programmes.

The Association of Nigerian Musicologists and other professional bodies have continued to play a role in advancing scholarship around Nigerian and African music, including research into indigenous musical traditions, gospel music, composition, performance and music education.

Olukoya’s role in the musical space has also included advocacy for broader participation in music. In December 2025, The Nation reported that he encouraged Nigerian women to develop their musical abilities, particularly in organ playing, describing music as a vehicle for evangelism, empowerment and self-development. At the programme, organised by the Association of Nigerian Female Organists, Olukoya was identified as the organisation’s Grand Patron.

Beyond institutional support, Olukoya has also produced musical works associated with Christian worship. His compositions have been performed by choirs and musicians, while scholars have examined the broader relationship between gospel music, religion and Nigerian society.

Academic research into Nigerian gospel music has similarly highlighted the importance of studying the genre not merely as religious expression but as part of Nigeria’s wider cultural and social landscape. Research published on Nigerian gospel music has examined its musical styles, theological dimensions and implications for worship and society.

The latest honour therefore underscores a broader recognition of the role individuals and institutions can play in sustaining Nigeria’s music ecosystem. For a country whose contemporary music industry has achieved substantial international visibility, experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of strengthening the academic and educational foundations supporting musical creativity.

The award to Olukoya also highlights the growing relevance of partnerships between religious organisations, universities, professional music associations and individual patrons in preserving Nigeria’s musical heritage while creating opportunities for emerging musicians and scholars.

While the Life Grand Patron recognition is an honour bestowed by the music community, its significance ultimately rests on the continuing contribution of scholarship, education, performance and institutional support to Nigeria’s cultural development.

For Obaland magazine, the recognition offers an opportunity to view Olukoya’s contribution beyond his identity as a religious leader and consider his documented involvement in music education, musical composition and support for academic institutions. Such contributions form part of the wider story of how Nigeria’s cultural and intellectual institutions are being shaped by individuals outside the conventional music industry.
