  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

New travel information show say people wey carry Nigerian passport fit apply for electronic visa, wey dem dey call eVisa, to 54 countries and territories around di world.

Di information, wey eVisas.io publish for 2026, show say Nigerian passport holders currently get eVisa access to 54 destinations. E mean say travellers fit begin di visa application process online before dem travel, instead of always going embassy to submit application physically.

Among di destinations wey di list include na countries for Africa, Asia, Middle East, Europe, Caribbean and other parts of di world. Some of di destinations include Angola, Bahrain, Burundi, Bolivia, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Colombia, Cuba, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Iraq, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Madagascar, Malawi, Malaysia, Namibia, Nicaragua, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Singapore, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Thailand, Uganda, Vietnam, Zambia and South Africa.

But travellers need understand say eVisa no mean say person fit enter every country automatically. Na permission wey traveller must apply for before journey, and di country wey dey receive di application still get power to approve or reject am based on im immigration rules.

Di latest figures also show say Nigerian passport holders get visa-free access to 26 destinations, while another five destinations offer visa-on-arrival arrangements, according to di same 2026 travel database.

Dis kind travel arrangement fit make international movement easier for Nigerians, especially people wey dey travel for business, education, tourism, family visits and other legitimate reasons. E also fit reduce some of di stress wey dey come with traditional visa applications, although requirements, processing time and fees still dey depend on each destination.

Nigeria passport mobility don remain important issue for African travellers because visa rules fit affect business opportunities, tourism, education and movement across borders. Earlier reports from Nigerian media, including Daily Times Nigeria, don also highlight how changes for Nigeria passport access have affected Nigerians’ ability to travel internationally. For 2025, Daily Times reported say Nigerian passport holders had visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 54 destinations under di Henley Passport Index at di time.

However, di 54 figure wey eVisas.io dey report now na specifically destinations wey Nigerian passport holders fit access through eVisa, so e no be di same thing as 54 visa-free destinations. Dis difference important because eVisa still require application and approval before travel.

Travel rules fit also change without much notice. Requirements like passport validity, passport photograph, proof of accommodation, return or onward ticket, proof of money, purpose of travel and other supporting documents fit apply depending on di country.

Because of dis, Nigerians wey plan travel should confirm di latest requirement directly from di immigration authority, embassy or official visa portal of di country wey dem wan visit before dem pay for flight or make final travel arrangement.

Di growing use of online visa systems across Africa and other parts of di world also show how immigration authorities dey gradually move parts of international travel from physical paperwork to digital processing. Di African Development Bank’s Africa Visa Openness work don previously highlight how different African countries dey introduce electronic visa systems and other digital travel procedures, although implementation and requirements still dey differ from one country to another.

For Nigerian travellers, di main message be say online visa access don give dem another route to plan international journeys. But eVisa eligibility alone no guarantee entry. Travellers still need meet di conditions of di destination country and get valid approval before dem travel.

Di 54 eVisa destinations therefore represent more online application opportunities for Nigerian passport holders, but travellers need verify each country’s latest rules before journey to avoid unnecessary delay, financial loss or denial of boarding.
