Nigerian Students Secure Gold at 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in China, Marking Historic Global Achievement.
Nigerian students have secured a Gold Award at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China, delivering a landmark achievement for Team Nigeria on the international academic stage.
The accomplishment follows Nigeria’s historic debut at the global competition, where four young spellers represented the country after progressing through national and African spelling bee championships. The team comprised 2026 African Spelling Bee Junior champion Oluwadamilola Adeolu, Abdurrahman Yusuf, Chinedu Okediachi and Maryam Yusuf.
Nigeria’s participation in the competition, held from July 10 to 20, 2026, marked the country’s first appearance at the World Spelling Bee. The students’ journey to the global stage followed strong performances in national and continental competitions, highlighting the growing recognition of academic competitions as platforms for nurturing literacy, confidence and intellectual excellence among Nigerian youths.
The achievement further builds on Nigeria’s strong performance at the 2026 African Spelling Bee in Harare, Zimbabwe, where Nigerian contestants earned top honours. Adeolu Oluwadamilola Oreofe, a 14 year old student from Ekiti State, emerged as the Junior Champion after competing against participants from more than 20 African countries.
The Gold Award in China represents another significant milestone for Nigeria’s education and youth development landscape. Beyond the competition itself, the performance underscores the importance of sustained investment in literacy, talent development and opportunities that enable young Nigerians to compete on global platforms.
