The recent Sallah celebration in Nigeria was marred by tragedy as nine people lost their lives and 78 others sustained injuries in 13 road crashes. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that these accidents involved 21 vehicles and affected a total of 128 people. The injured individuals were quickly transported to hospitals in the region, while 41 others were rescued without any injuries.
The FRSC conducted a special operation for the Sallah celebration, covering major routes within its jurisdiction. Acting Zonal Commanding Officer, Leye Adegboyega, revealed that a total of 3,018 personnel, 57 patrol vehicles, five ambulances, and two heavy-duty tow trucks were deployed during this period. The personnel patrolled approximately 65 major routes daily to enhance visibility and reduce speed-related crashes. Standby rescue teams were also stationed across all commands in the zone to respond promptly to distress calls.
The FRSC’s mission during the Sallah festivities was to ensure the smooth flow of traffic, minimize road traffic crashes, provide immediate rescue services in the event of accidents, and ensure timely clearance of obstructions on major roads. The operations covered the states of Osun, Ondo, and Oyo.
In the first three days of the operation, the FRSC achieved significant milestones. They arrested 737 traffic offenders who had committed 766 various traffic offenses that could have potentially led to avoidable crashes. Additionally, they conducted 219 public enlightenment activities across different platforms to promote road safety awareness. The FRSC also provided prompt rescue services for the victims of the 13 crashes, ensuring that they received necessary medical attention.
Looking ahead, the FRSC appeals to the public and all road users to exercise responsibility and contribute to the reduction of casualties and property damage on the roads.
