NLC Gives Tinubu Government 14-Day Ultimatum to Reduce Fuel Prices, Renegotiate Minimum Wage.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to reduce petrol prices, commence negotiations for a new national minimum wage and implement outstanding agreements with organized labour, intensifying pressure on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to address Nigeria’s worsening cost-of-living crisis.

The ultimatum, which takes effect on Friday, October 9, 2026, followed a joint meeting of the NLC’s National Executive Council and Central Working Committee at Labour House in Abuja. In a communiqué signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero, the labour union warned that failure to meet its demands within the stipulated period could trigger further action by the labour movement.

At the centre of the dispute is the rising cost of petrol and its impact on workers’ purchasing power. The NLC has called on the government to reduce petrol prices nationwide to the level prevailing when the current national minimum wage was signed into law in 2024. The union argues that escalating fuel costs have increased transportation fares and pushed up the prices of food and other essential goods, placing additional pressure on households already struggling to meet basic needs.

The Congress also wants the Federal Government to commence negotiations for a new national minimum wage before the end of October. Nigeria’s current statutory minimum wage of ₦70,000 per month was approved by President Tinubu in July 2024 following negotiations involving the government, organized labour and the private sector. However, the NLC maintains that rising living costs and the declining purchasing power of the naira have substantially eroded the value of workers’ earnings.

Beyond petrol prices and wage negotiations, the labour organisation is demanding tax relief for workers and the immediate introduction of wage awards to cushion the effects of economic hardship. It has also called for the implementation of the February 5, 2026, Terms of Settlement reached with the Joint Health Sector Unions and Assembly of Healthcare Professionals (JOHESU), alongside the resolution of outstanding demands presented by the Joint Public Sector Negotiating Council.

The latest ultimatum comes amid continuing concerns over the affordability of essential goods and services across Nigeria. Petrol price increases have far-reaching consequences in an economy where road transportation plays a central role in moving agricultural produce, manufactured goods and people. Higher fuel costs can increase business operating expenses, raise transport fares and contribute to higher consumer prices, placing disproportionate pressure on low-income households and workers on fixed salaries.

The Federal Government has also announced measures intended to address petrol price volatility. According to Reuters, Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Taiwo Oyedele announced on October 8 that the government was negotiating a proposed ceiling of approximately ₦1,350 per litre on petrol’s ex-gantry or landing cost, subject to monthly reviews. The proposal is intended to moderate price fluctuations, although the proposed ceiling does not automatically guarantee that petrol will sell at that price at filling stations.

The government also announced a temporary 30 day discount arrangement for petrol sold by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, with priority given to public transport operators. However, the NLC’s demand goes beyond temporary relief measures, as the union is insisting on a reduction to the price level that prevailed when the current minimum wage was enacted in 2024.

The labour dispute has broader implications for industrial relations and economic policy in Africa’s most populous country. The government must balance its economic reform objectives with the immediate financial pressures facing workers and vulnerable households. For organized labour, the central issue is whether existing wages and government interventions can adequately protect workers’ living standards amid persistent cost pressures.

The NLC has directed its affiliates and allies to remain prepared for further action should the government fail to respond within the 14 day period. Although the union has not announced a specific nationwide strike under this latest ultimatum, its warning raises the prospect of renewed industrial confrontation if negotiations fail to produce meaningful results.

As the deadline begins, attention will turn to the Federal Government’s response to the union’s demands, particularly whether it will initiate minimum wage negotiations, introduce additional relief measures and address outstanding agreements. The outcome could shape relations between the government and organized labour in the coming weeks, while millions of Nigerians continue to contend with the rising cost of living.
