Norwood Man Apologises for Gaza Remarks After Racist Confrontation With Muslim Motorist!

A Johannesburg man, Rodney Plett, has apologised to Muslim motorist and content creator Abdur Rahamaan following a confrontation in Norwood that was recorded and widely circulated online.

Plett said he regretted bringing the Israel-Gaza war into the confrontation, explaining that he was angry and deliberately referred to the conflict because he knew it would cause pain. In his statement issued, he apologised to Rahamaan, the Muslim community and residents of Norwood.

“I was angry, and I reached for the thing I knew would hurt most,” Plett said, according to IOL. He added that Rahamaan had done nothing to deserve the remarks and described his own conduct as something he was ashamed of.

The confrontation reportedly occurred on September 21, 2026, during the final hours of Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement. Rahamaan, 35, recorded the encounter and later shared the footage publicly. The incident drew condemnation from Jewish community organisations and renewed discussion about racism, Islamophobia and tensions surrounding the Israel-Gaza conflict.

The dispute began as a traffic-related confrontation in Norwood. Rahamaan alleged that Plett followed him, hooted and flashed his vehicle lights before the exchange escalated. He subsequently alleged that Plett directed racist and anti-Muslim abuse at him and made references to the killing of people in Gaza. The Citizen reported that Rahamaan opened a crimen injuria case at Norwood police station and also lodged a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission.

Plett offered his own account of how the confrontation began. He said he had been fasting for about 23 hours, had not taken his medication because of the fast and was travelling to Chabad of Norwood, where he was expected to perform security duties.

He said a vehicle approaching from the opposite direction braked suddenly and turned into the road he was also preparing to enter. Plett said he believed the vehicles had nearly collided, became angry and decided to confront the driver.

However, he acknowledged that the circumstances did not excuse what followed.

Plett said he had watched the video of the confrontation and was ashamed of his conduct. He also apologised to Rahamaan and other Muslims who may have been affected by his comments.

The apology comes days after Chabad of Norwood condemned the language used during the confrontation and reached out to Rahamaan. The South African Jewish Board of Deputies also described Plett’s conduct as offensive and unacceptable.

Plett further apologised to members of his own Jewish community, including Rabbi Mordechai and Sara Rodal and the Chabad of Norwood congregation. He invoked the Jewish concept of “chillul Hashem”, describing his actions as bringing shame to his community.

He said he understood that the conduct of one individual could unfairly affect perceptions of wider Jewish-Muslim relations, particularly among communities that have maintained longstanding relationships in South Africa.

Plett’s lawyers have reportedly approached Rahamaan’s legal representatives with a proposal concerning an apology and settlement. He said no response had been received at the time of his statement but that he remained willing to engage.

The incident has also attracted attention from wider South African civil society. The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation condemned the confrontation and described the reported racial and Islamophobic abuse as deeply concerning.

Plett said he would not give further interviews while the police investigation continues. He also appealed to members of the public not to harass or threaten Rahamaan or his family.

He urged residents not to use the confrontation to deepen divisions between Jewish and Muslim communities in Norwood, arguing that the neighbourhood has long been home to people from different religious and cultural backgrounds.

The episode illustrates how personal confrontations can become intertwined with broader political and communal tensions, particularly when highly sensitive issues such as the Israel-Gaza war are introduced into disputes. The apology does not resolve the separate legal and human-rights processes arising from the incident, which remain ongoing.

For Obaland Magazine, the central issue remains the need for accountability, due process and respect for human dignity across religious and ethnic communities. The facts surrounding the legal complaints will ultimately depend on the outcome of the relevant authorities’ investigations.
