NSCDC Arrests 24 Year Old Suspected Telecom Mast Vandal in Anambra.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command, has arrested a 24 year old man over the alleged vandalism and theft of equipment from a telecommunications mast in Agu Awka, Anambra State.
The suspect, identified as Nweke Wisdom, from Izzi South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was arrested at about 7:20 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, at Esther Obiakor Estate, Agu Awka, following a distress call reporting suspected vandalism at the facility. He was subsequently taken to the NSCDC State Headquarters in Awka for further investigation.
According to the NSCDC, the suspect was allegedly found with items believed to have been removed from the mast installation, including DC and armoured cables. The Corps said preliminary investigations indicated that he allegedly specialized in vandalizing telecommunications masts and removing valuable equipment.
The development was disclosed by Edwin Okadigbo, Head of Media and Tactical Operations of the NSCDC Anambra State Command. The Corps said the suspect had made what it described as useful confessions and would be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
The arrest highlights the continuing security concerns surrounding the protection of telecommunications infrastructure, which forms part of the critical infrastructure supporting mobile communication and digital connectivity. Vandalism of such facilities can disrupt services and expose telecommunications operators and users to additional operational and economic costs.
The NSCDC reiterated its commitment to protecting critical national assets and infrastructure across Anambra State. The command also urged residents to report suspicious activities to security agencies, stressing that public cooperation remains important in preventing attacks on essential infrastructure.
The suspect remains an alleged offender at this stage, as the investigation and any subsequent court proceedings will determine the facts and applicable legal responsibility.
