The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has been honoured with the “Beacon of Education Award” by Beautiful Beginning Academy for her contributions to education and youth empowerment.
The award was presented on Friday during the Academy’s 2026 graduation ceremony at Nile University, Abuja. The school also recognized the NUJ FCT’s support during a national media quiz competition, where Beautiful Beginning Academy emerged overall winner.
Presenting the award, Proprietor and Managing Director of Beautiful Beginning Academy, Dr. Mrs. Rosemary Nasa Okolie, praised Ike’s commitment to children’s welfare.
Okolie said the school reached out to the NUJ FCT just two weeks before the competition and Ike responded immediately by providing welfare support, logistics and encouragement for the pupils.
“She came in and changed the narrative. There is nothing I can give her that equals what she has done for these children,” Okolie said.
Receiving the award, an emotional Ike said the recognition was a surprise and dedicated it to Ms. Adaeze Tochukwu Taha Okeke, a student with special needs whose story moved her during the ceremony.
She pledged to use her position and the media to amplify the voices of children living with special needs.
“I will amplify their voices, tell their stories and continue to use journalism to draw attention to their needs so society can better support them,” she said.
Ike also commended Adaeze’s family for their dedication, noting that their commitment would continue to inspire advocacy for inclusion and equal opportunities
The award presentation drew applause from parents, teachers, guests and graduating students, underscoring the impact of partnerships between the media and schools in promoting inclusive education and youth development.
