The South-South Zonal Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has congratulated the Chairman of the Edo State Council of the union, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, on his appointment as Acting Managing Director of the Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS).
In a communiqué issued on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at the end of its zonal meeting held in Calabar, Cross River State, the council described Alenkhe’s appointment as a well-deserved recognition of his exemplary leadership and contributions to journalism.
The meeting, presided over by the Vice President of the zone, Comrade Opaka Dokubo, also commended Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for the appointment, describing it as “a round peg in a round hole.”
The zonal council condemned the increasing attacks, harassment, and cyberbullying of journalists across the South-South region and called on security agencies to take decisive action against perpetrators.
The council also expressed concern over the worsening security situation in the country and urged governments in the South-South region to strengthen community policing and other grassroots security initiatives to safeguard lives and property.
On infrastructure development, the council applauded the Federal Government for the completion of the Aba–Ikot Ekpene Highway and the ongoing work on the Calabar–Itu Highway. It, however, urged the government to expedite the completion of critical road projects to reduce accidents and improve economic activities.
The council further called for urgent environmental remediation in oil-producing communities across the Niger Delta, citing the adverse effects of environmental degradation on residents.
The meeting appreciated the Cross River State Council of the NUJ for hosting the zonal gathering, ratified the appointment of Elder Bolaji Anani as Zonal Patron, and charged state councils within the zone to support zonal funding initiatives and uphold the union’s disciplinary standards ahead of the 2027 general elections.
