The Ewuare II has advocated intensive unarmed combat training and regular physical exercise for personnel of the Nigeria Police Force nationwide.

The revered monarch described combat training as an essential skill that could help police officers defend themselves, especially in situations where they are unarmed or attacked without access to firearms.

Oba Ewuare II gave the advice on Friday while receiving the Inspector-General of Police, Rilwan Disu, during a visit to his palace in Benin City, Edo State.

The monarch prayed to God Almighty and his ancestors to protect the IGP and officers of the force from harm, while also expressing hope that the cordial relationship between the traditional institution and the police would continue to flourish.
According to the Oba, the appointment of an IGP with expertise in unarmed combat was commendable.

“I am not sure that we Nigerians have had an IGP that is skilled in unarmed combat except you. Having a black belt in Judo as IGP is very impressive.

“I am not sure that most police officers have gone through intensive unarmed combat training, which is very necessary, especially when you do not have your gun with you. As a police officer, you can use your hands to defend yourself,” the monarch stated.

The first-class traditional ruler also urged the IGP to address cases of human rights abuses and violations allegedly perpetrated by overzealous police officers.

He further stressed the importance of collaboration between traditional institutions and security agencies, pledging the palace’s support towards the success of the new police leadership.

“My dear IGP, you will be in our prayers. We will be praying for you and your men, to keep you from harm’s way and to restore good relationship between the palace and the police. We will work closely together as always,” he added.

Earlier, the Inspector-General of Police, Rilwan Disu, commended the sterling qualities of the Oba of Benin and recalled the historical ties between his Yoruba ancestry and the Benin Kingdom.

The IGP also informed the monarch about his address to officers and men at the Edo State Police Headquarters.

He was accompanied to the palace by senior police officers, including the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika.
During the visit, Chief Enorense Ozigbo-Esere, the Osuma of Benin, offered prayers on behalf of the Benin Palace.
