Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of neglecting Imo State, alleging that the Federal Government has failed to adequately address the insecurity and economic hardship affecting residents.
Obi made the remarks following a town hall meeting with residents of Imo State where he criticised the Tinubu administration’s handling of the country’s security and economic challenges.
The former Anambra State governor questioned the President’s attention to Imo State, claiming that Tinubu had not spent a single night in the state despite spending more than 260 days abroad.
He also criticised the Federal Government over what he described as excessive borrowing without corresponding improvements in the living conditions of Nigerians.
Obi argued that the country’s growing poverty, insecurity and economic difficulties reflected inadequate attention to the needs of ordinary citizens. He maintained that public resources should be directed towards improving security, education, healthcare and economic opportunities.
According to him, Nigeria has continued to accumulate significant debts while millions of citizens struggle with poverty and other socioeconomic challenges.
The NDC presidential candidate also called for stronger action against corruption and insecurity, insisting that protecting lives and property must remain a fundamental responsibility of government.
During town hall meeting, Obi described Nigeria’s situation as deteriorating and accused the Tinubu administration of failing to provide adequate security for citizens.
He pledged that if elected alongside his political ally, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, his administration would prioritise national unity, tackle insecurity and strengthen accountability in public spending.
Obi’s comments form part of his broader criticism of the Tinubu administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
However, his allegations and assessment of the Federal Government’s performance remain political claims and should be considered alongside the administration’s own account of its policies and achievements.
Peter Obi accuses President Tinubu of neglecting Imo State, citing insecurity, poverty, rising debt and the President’s absence from the state.
