Ogun Communities Demand Solutions to Annual Flooding Crisis

Residents of the Isheri Estates community along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway are calling on the Ogun State Government for urgent action to address severe flooding that has plagued the area in recent weeks.

The flooding crisis intensified after water was released from the Oyan River Dam, causing the Ogun River to overflow its banks and flood nearby estates. Many residents have been forced to relocate due to the rising waters.

Community member Olayinka Adewusi expressed frustration over the lack of effective government intervention, stating, “Since the flood began, nothing has changed. We need a lasting solution. The government sold this land to us and should not abandon us in this crisis.”

Another resident voiced concerns about the inadequacy of previous government efforts, including dredging, which had minimal impact on the current situation. The community is considering organizing protests to demand more substantial action.

In response to the flooding, the Ogun State Government has begun plans to provide temporary shelter for affected residents and is urging those in flood-prone areas to evacuate promptly. The state’s Commissioner for Environment has been assessing the situation on-site and is working on improving drainage and flood management efforts in the community.
