“Ogun Records 161 Road Crash Deaths in Five Months as FRSC Urges Stronger Safety Measures”
The Ogun State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has disclosed that no fewer than 161 people lost their lives in 415 road traffic crashes recorded across the state between January and May 2026.
According to the FRSC, the crashes also left 1,007 people injured, highlighting the continued challenge of road safety in one of Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors.
Speaking on the latest road safety statistics, the Ogun State Sector Command attributed many of the crashes to preventable factors, including speeding, dangerous overtaking, driver fatigue, reckless driving, overloading, and poor compliance with traffic regulations. The command stressed that most road crashes are caused by human error and can be significantly reduced through responsible driving and strict enforcement of traffic laws.
The agency urged motorists to obey speed limits, avoid distractions while driving, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances. Commercial transport operators were also encouraged to prioritize regular vehicle maintenance and ensure drivers receive adequate rest before embarking on long distance journeys.
Ogun State remains a major transit route linking Lagos and several northern, eastern, and southwestern states, making its highways among the busiest in the country. Safety experts have repeatedly warned that increasing traffic volume, combined with risky driving behaviour, continues to contribute to the high number of crashes recorded annually.
The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening public awareness campaigns, enhancing traffic enforcement, and collaborating with relevant stakeholders to reduce road accidents and save lives across the state. The agency also appealed to road users to see safety as a shared responsibility, emphasizing that compliance with traffic regulations is essential to preventing avoidable tragedies.
