Okpebholo Hails Akubeze’s Influence at 20th Episcopal Anniversary

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has credited the spiritual guidance and prayers of the Catholic Archbishop of Benin City, Most Rev. Dr. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, as a key influence on his leadership, as the cleric marked his 20th Episcopal Anniversary.

Speaking at the anniversary thanksgiving service, the governor described his first encounter with Archbishop Akubeze as a defining moment that shaped both his political journey and personal commitment to public service.

“To me, it is a special day. The first day I met him, I saw the glory of God upon his life. I knew, by the time I knelt before him, that I was going to conquer,” Okpebholo said.

He disclosed that he sought the Archbishop’s prayers at a critical stage of his journey, particularly as he prepared to confront key challenges facing the state.

“I requested a prayer from him. I said I was going to fight cultism and work for Edo people. I needed him to pray for me so that God would give me the strength. Today, I am happy that everything I requested has been answered by God,” he added.

The governor emphasized that Archbishop Akubeze’s spiritual support strengthened his resolve in office, noting that the 20th anniversary represents not just longevity but impactful service and mentorship.

Congratulating the Archbishop, Okpebholo expressed optimism for continued years of influence and leadership.

“This is 20 years, and we are still expecting more years to come,” he said.

The thanksgiving service, held on Wednesday at St. Paul Catholic Church, attracted dignitaries, religious leaders, and well-wishers from within and outside the state.

Among those in attendance were the Esama of Benin Kingdom, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion; former Edo State Governor, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; former Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu; and APC State Deputy Chairman, Sylvester Aigboboh, among others.

Archbishop Akubeze’s two decades of episcopal leadership have been widely acknowledged for fostering spiritual growth, promoting peace, and offering moral guidance that continues to influence governance and society.
